4 Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Picardy Place, Edinburgh, Scotland in 1859. At the age of seven Arthur began his education at Newington Academy in Edinburgh.  In 1868 at the age of nine Conan Doyle is sent to Jesuit boarding school in England.

5 In 1876 Doyle graduated Stonyhurst College at the age of 17 and аttended the Edinburgh University Medical School

6 In 1881 Conan Doyle passed qualifying examinations and Bachelor of Medicine and Master of Surgery are awarded to him.   In 1882 Arthur left for Portsmouth to establish is own medical practice. He began to work in a small English town Southsea, where he spent eight years.

7 Conan Doyle married Louise 'Toulie' Hawkins in 1885

9 Literary career Sir Arthur wrote twenty-one novels and over 150 short stories. He also published nonfiction, essays, articles, memoirs and three volumes of poetry. He left thousands of letters to the press, his mother (about 1500 letters), family, friends and acquaintances. He joined the Portsmouth Literary and Scientific Society in 1883.

In 1879 Conan Doyle's work is published for the first time.   The story is  The Mystery of the Sasassa Valley. After marrying Louisa Hawkins in 1885, Conan became famous for his novel A Tangled Skein. A few years later, having revised the novel, calling the main characters Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, the novel was republished under the name A Study in Scarlet.

Between 1887 and 1927, Doyle wrote four novels and fifty-six stories with Sherlock Holmes Some of the best known of the Holmes stories are  The Sign of the four (1890),  The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1892),  The Hound of the Baskervilles (1902),  His Last Bow (1917). They made Conan Doyle internationally famous. It was Conan Doyle who first introduced to literature the character of the scientific detective. 

12 Conan Doyle's historical romances:
 Micah Clarke (1888),  The White Company (1890),  Rodney Stone (1896),  Sir Nigel (1906), and his play A Story of Waterloo (1894).

13 Conan Doyle served in the Boer War as a physician, and on his return to England wrote: 
The Great Boer War  (1900) and The War in South Africa: Its Causes and Conduct (1902) For these works he was knighted in 1902.

14 During World War I he wrote History of the British Campaign in France and Flanders
(6 volumes, ) His autobiography, Memories and Adventures, was published in 1924.

15 Conan Doyle died in Crowborough,
Sussex, England, on July 7, 1930. He was 71 years old.
