The Desert Biome. Desert Characterization A Desert is a region on Earth which receives less than 10 in of annual rain fall, and is generally taken over.
Deserts are areas of land that get little to no rainfall.
 Desert biomes are hot and dry and don’t support a lot of plant or animal life.  The desert is covered with sand and almost no grass or vegetation.

 The air is dry and hat reaching to 100 to 130 degrees Fahrenheit.  the desert contains a small amount of vegetation.  The average amount of rainfall is 1 to 3 inches in a year.  The camel is the most adapted to the desert environment. Due to their long eye lashes and long legs which make it easier to get around the sandy environment.

 The average amount of rain the Sahara desert will receive yearly is only about 3 inches.  The temperature for the Sahara desert in extremely hot with a record of degrees.  When the sun sets the temperature drops to 55 or 32 degrees.

 Different animals in the area are : coyotes, owls, thorny lizards, and vultures and of course camels.  Different plants in the area are: crimson hedgehog cactus, chainfruit cholla, and Brittle bush.  The Sahara desert in the hottest place on earth with the temperature being over a 100 degrees during the day.

Plants/ cactus sun Insect/ant hawk Horned lizard

 Scientific name is: Moloch horridus  They have thorns on their head and back to protect them from predators.  They inflate themselves to look bigger and also to protect them from predators so they cannot be swallowed.  In the summer they are a pale yellow and/or color. When winter comes they turn a darker color.  They also turn a darker color if they sense that they are in danger.  They have a special walk which they rock back and forth and at a slow pace. They stop often to observe their surroundings and to make sure there are no predators around.

 They grow at an elevation of 3,020 to 7,915  Their main bloom color is red but they also can have pink or lavender colored blooms.  At night is when they exchange carbon dioxide and oxygen and during the day is when they do photosynthesis.  They are “barrel-shaped” and van grow up to 20 feet tall with many different variations in up to 6 to 8 feet.  The flowers only bloom from April until June.

 The main issue for this biome is the high temperatures and the fact it causes many diseases like malaria and sleeping sickness.  Many people have to leave this area because there is not enough water even for the 2 million people that live in the area.  The native animals are eating all of the vegetation faster then they can produce which creates more sand and which is know causing less rain clouds to produce.

 The problem is trying to be fixed with a few solutions:  Planting more bushes and trees.  New ways to rotate plants to protect the fragile soil  Digging artificial grooves to collect the rainfall and the wind blow seeds.
