2 A desert is a place with 10 inches or 25cm of rain or less a year. Deserts cover about one third of the earth's surface. The landscape of deserts are very greatly; but all deserts have 1 thing in common. They are all extremely dry, and can be one of the harshest places on earth. Many deserts have extremes in temperature, with very high temperatures in the day and cold temperatures at night. Deserts are not only made of sand as many people think. They also contain rocks, mountains, and sand. Desert sands are often rock which has weathered down to sand over the centuries. A desert is a place with 10 inches or 25cm of rain or less a year. There are 3 main ways in which a desert can be made. They are mostly made because of a lack of water. 1) No moistures or dry regions are caused by not being near a large body of water. 2) Inland areas lack of moisture from the air. 3) Mountains may prevent rain from reaching areas making the areas dry and after a while a desert ("urban development for you") Web. 17 Mar 2010.. 3 Sahara: Sahara is the world's largest desert, technically the world's third largest desert. At over 9,000,000 square kilometers it covers most of Northern Africa, it is making it almost as large as the United States or the continent of Europe. The desert stretches from the Red Sea, and parts of the Mediterranean coasts, to the outer part of the Atlantic Ocean. "sahara." N.p., 2010 17 march. Web. 17 Mar 2010. Web. 17 Mar 2010..

5 Cactus : Cactus can live in the desert because, inside of the cactus there is a water system it stores water in the cactus from the ground. The roots are very long so they go deep into the ground to get water. When explorers are in the desert they tear open a cactus to get water, but they had to be careful of those sharp spikes. Jumping Cholla : It grows at the range of 300 to 1000 meters. The jumping cholla is a tree-like plant with one low-branching trunk. It often grows to heights of 4 m or 12 ft, with drooping branches of chained fruit. The stems are light green, measuring 6 to 9 mm. Together, the plants form fantastic looking forests that may range over many units of surface. Welwitschia: Curious plant of dry regions of southwestern Africa having a yard-high and yard-wide trunk like a turnip with a deep taproot and two large persistent woody straplike leaves growing from the bottom. 8 An amazing Australian reptile, this creature is covered in thorns. Despite its appearance, it is totally harmless. They are found in central and western Australia throughout deserts and light bush land. The Thorny Devil is on average about 20 cms long, and they feed on a wide bunch of ants. They catch them by using their tongue much the same as an ant-eater would do. Amazing Animal Fact: If rain lands on the Thorny Devils back, it runs down the creature finding its way to its mouth where it is consumed. Did you know? The Thorny Devil has the ability to change color. Web. 17 Mar 2010.. "Thorny Devil." N.p., 2004-2006. Web. 17 Mar 2010. <http:/www.australianfauna.com thornydevil.php>.

9 Camels are amazing animals they can travel morning to night with out any water or food. They also have a special kind of nose so when the wind blows they can close their nose and won’t get sand in it,the same with their eyes they have special long eye lashes that can protect them from getting sand in it’s eyes. The reason for the hump is that all the fat is stored inside so they can keep cool and when it starts get colder then they can use that fat to keep warm. Web. 17 Mar 2010..
