What is it? Awareness Campaign  Goal: to help Virginia Beach City Public School students and families to understand what it means to be responsible digital citizens  Realize social media posts and their impact exist forever, regardless of whether they are deleted or not

Visit the VBCPS Website  Updated regularly with information for displaying your best self as you develop an online presence  Monthly content focused around important information for teens and young adults  The month of May focuses on getting a summer job and how to use social media to positively promote yourself!

Teens and Social Media Addiction  In moderation, social media can be a great way for teens to connect to others, to relate to their peers and to express themselves  However, many social media users, adults included, are digitally distracted. It is important to recognize the signs that you and your device need a break  People can become so preoccupied with social media that it distracts them from engaging in the real world  If you feel social media and mobile interaction has begun to interfere with your life speak to your guidance counselor

Everyone Makes Mistakes  One social media mishap can have life changing consequences  When asked in an online poll 67% of teens reported making an online mistake that caused them to lose friends, jobs or their place on a sports or academic team  Example: Laremy Tunsil April 28, 2016  Potentially lost millions due to social media video Breaking News  Everyone makes mistakes. Don’t let your mistakes be broadcasted over social media  Remember: camera phones are always rolling even if yours is not!

Present Your Best Self ie Maintain a Positive Image Online  Share pictures that represent the real you  Don’t follow negative trends  Wear appropriate clothing  Think before you share and download  Be yourself and lead by example  Use proper tone and language especially during disagreements

How to: Take the best selfie  Tilt your head at an angle  Find the perfect light  Hit your signature pose  Switch it up with filters  Hold the camera above your head  Never take yourself too seriously!
