 The dangers of intoxication, side effects, and addiction are not the only risks of drug abuse.  Other risks include:  car accidents  accidental injury or death  violence and other criminal activity  unplanned pregnancy  sexually transmitted diseases ©2016NorthsideISD(SanAntonio,TX )

 When a teen or other family member is using drugs, it destroys trust within the family.  Drug abuse often leads to family violence.  Drug use can be dangerous to pregnant women and to the fetus.  Neonatal abstinence syndrome is withdrawal that occurs in newborn infants whose mothers were frequent drug users during pregnancy. ©2016NorthsideISD(SanAntonio,TX )

 Like the use of tobacco and alcohol, drug use imposes economic costs on society.  Billions of dollars are spent in the U.S. each year on health care resulting from drug abuse.  There are also costs from lost productivity at work, accidents, suicide, and other drug- related problems.  Drug abuse and addiction also increase crime.  1 out of every 4 prisoners is in jail for a drug-related crime. ©2016NorthsideISD(SanAntonio,TX )

 Tolerance develops after repeated drug use when the user finds that it takes more of a drug to feel the same effect felt when using the first drug.  Tolerance eventually leads to dependence. ©2016NorthsideISD(SanAntonio,TX )

 The state in which the body relies on a given drug in order to function normally is known as physical dependence.  The state of emotionally or mentally needing a drug in order to function normally is called psychological dependence. ©2016NorthsideISD(SanAntonio,TX )

 Addiction is a condition in which a person can no longer control his or her drug use.  Most drugs of abuse activate the brain reward system, which releases chemicals that give pleasure.  The pleasure that these drugs produce trick the body into thinking the drug is good for you.  People who become addicts usually start by experimenting, then more regular use leads to a series of changes on the path to addiction. ©2016NorthsideISD(SanAntonio,TX ) Video

 The uncomfortable physical and psychological symptoms produced when a physically dependent drug user stops using drugs is called withdrawal.  Withdrawal keeps addiction going because the distressing symptoms drive the addict to take more drugs to alleviate these symptoms. ©2016NorthsideISD(SanAntonio,TX )
