Theme of the novel It is ironic that Holden is so concerned preserving innocence, and he wants to be the Catcher in the Rye – because he himself is SO innocent Think about it: 1)He doesn’t know anything about sex – he admits how confused he is 2)Tries to act grown up a lot, but it very clearly doesn’t fool anyone (they keep asking him how old he is/ refusing to serve him alcohol) 3)The poem that he thinks is about keeping innocence (if a body, catch a body) is actually about sex/love –Holden is too innocent to realize this.
