Presentation transcript:

“Comin thro’ the Rye” The book has talked about this song several times now. Can you recall the situations in which we first heard about it? When was the first time? A young boy was singing it, he was walking on a curb and could fall into the street at any second, it did not appear his parents were paying attention When was the second time? Later, Phoebe (his sister) points out to Holden that he misheard the lyrics, it wasn't "If a body 'catch' a body," but "If a body 'meet' a body".

“Comin thro’ the Rye” What does Holden want to be when he grows up? Why does he want to do this?

Comin Thro' The Rye. Chorus. O Jenny's a' weet, poor body, Jenny's seldom dry: She draigl't a' her petticoatie, Comin thro' the rye! Comin thro' the rye, poor body, Comin thro' the rye, She draigl't a' her petticoatie, Comin thro' the rye! Gin a body meet a body Comin thro' the rye, Gin a body kiss a body, Need a body cry? Gin a body meet a body Comin thro' the glen, Gin a body kiss a body, Need the warld ken? Gin a body meet a body Comin thro' the grain, Gin a body kiss a body, The thing's a body's ain. Coming Through The Rye. Chorus. O Jenny is all wet, poor body, Jenny is seldom dry: She draggled all her petticoats, Coming through the rye! Coming through the rye, poor body, Coming through the rye, She draggled all her petticoats, Coming through the rye! Should a body meet a body Coming through the rye, Should a body kiss a body, Need a body cry? Should a body meet a body Coming through the glen, Should a body kiss a body, Need the world know? Should a body meet a body Coming through the grain, Should a body kiss a body, The thing is a body's own.

Coming Through The Rye. Chorus. O Jenny is all wet, poor body, Jenny is seldom dry: She draggled all her petticoats, Coming through the rye! A central Thematic idea of the novel What is Holden trying to prevent from happening? Novel’s central thematic idea is Loss of innocence

Theme of the novel It is ironic that Holden is so concerned preserving innocence, and he wants to be the Catcher in the Rye – because he himself is SO innocent Think about it: 1)He doesn’t know anything about sex – he admits how confused he is 2)Tries to act grown up a lot, but it very clearly doesn’t fool anyone (they keep asking him how old he is/ refusing to serve him alcohol) 3)The poem that he thinks is about keeping innocence (if a body, catch a body) is actually about sex/love –Holden is too innocent to realize this.

Coming of Age What does it take for us to grow up?

Step 1 The protagonist experiences an event or events that set him/her on a journey This experience is usually a tragic loss or sense of unhappiness that causes the character to leave

Step 2 The character is almost always stuck in an “unbending social order” where society has strict rules that one is supposed to follow

Step 3 A majority of the character’s conflict results from the social order, where the character struggles between his/her personal needs/wants and the “judgments enforced by this unbending social order”

Step 4 Eventually the character learns how to enter society. The novel ends with the character evaluating him/herself and his/her new place in society

What is the outcome? It typically ends on a positive note The hero/heroine has made some mistakes and experienced some painful disappointments, but is able to move on and put those experiences behind them End suggests a positive, happy future.

Coming of Age stories Typically include a young main character or protagonist At beginning, protagonist is shown to be immature or youthful Protagonist is faced with a difficult situation, obstacle, or choice Main conflict revolves around making the decision, overcoming an obstacle, or learning from a mistake The character makes an important decision, typically a symbolic one The decision helps define who he/she is. Why they did it helps explain what they learned. Character "grows up" at the end

A typical Coming of Age story pattern The problem - character encounters a challenge or problem Beginning - character introduced as youthful and immature Struggle - character struggles to overcome challenge or problem Big decision - character makes tough choice or decision; or overcomes difficult obstacle. Ending - Character is seen as different or changed. Significance of the learning is revealed.
