What is the Clem Burns Heritage Award? The Clem Burns Heritage Award is an annual competition conducted by the Western Australian Museum - Geraldton for students in years 3-6 in the Mid West. Now in its 27 th year the competition promotes an understanding of the region inspired by its rich cultural heritage and unique environment. Students develop 3D models based on the topic and entries will be displayed in the Museum over the Term 2 school holidays. The competition is judged and winners will receive a prize. The overall winner’s name will be engraved on an honor board for display in the administration area of their school Clem Burns Heritage Award

The 2016 task for students is to research Monsignor Hawes through the investigation of his buildings across the Mid West. Monsignor Hawes lived in the Mid West region for 24 years and left behind an outstanding legacy of architectural work. Hawes designed buildings for the community and in harmony with the climate and landscape. Many of these buildings are still used today as both religious and secular places and are admired throughout the Mid West region and beyond.

This year’s topic In response to this investigation students can either: 1. Build a model of an existing Monsignor Hawes building or, 2. Create a model of a community building that Monsignor Hawes might have designed in Key dates 10 June – Models will be accepted 24 June – Final date for models 29 June – Presentation ceremony 2016 Clem Burns Heritage Award

Entry guidelines Students are required to: Present a design or plan of a proposed model. Describe how their model is based on Monsignor Hawes design principles of suitability for the Mid West environment and the needs of the community (less than 400 words). Construct their model. Evaluate their model on completion. Evaluation forms will be supplied. Teachers must ensure: The number of entries is limited to 12 per classroom due to a limited display area. Entry size is restricted to 40cm x 40cm and is 3-dimensional. Research and evaluation sheets are attached to the bottom of the model in a plastic sleeve. The entry form is to be attached to the front or top of the model Clem Burns Heritage Award

Monsignor Hawes’s buildings Monsignor Hawes designed buildings and structures with the community, climate and environment in mind. Designing a building in 2016 Students should consider the type of community building they think would be valuable to people in the Mid West. Would it be a small gathering place or a large community space? Who would use the building? What would they use it for? 2016 Clem Burns Heritage Award

Designing a building in 2016 When designing a building in 2016 students should consider using sustainable materials such as mud brick construction, or locally sourced/mined materials that have low impact on the environment Clem Burns Heritage Award

Designing a building in 2016 Students should consider using solar panels and other active sustainable measures such as rain water collection Clem Burns Heritage Award

Designing a building in 2016 Students should consider the orientation of the building to suit the characteristics of the site Clem Burns Heritage Award

Designing a building in 2016 Students should consider the orientation of windows to the north and the direction of opening doors and windows to take advantage of natural cross ventilation Clem Burns Heritage Award

Designing a building in 2016 Student should consider using eaves and/or deep openings in walls to protect internal spaces from direct sun Clem Burns Heritage Award
