You Think Me Mad?…But What Do You Really Know? SHERRY WARD EDGAR ALLAN POE WEBQUEST FOR 11 TH GRADE ENGLISH

Introduction: (Listen to the audio as you read!)

TASK: The various works of Edgar Allan Poe have been studied throughout high school English classrooms across the world. However, what do we truly know about the man behind the short stories and poems, etc. that he has written?  Each member of your group (4 students per group), has been assigned a specific task in order to help chronical the life, works, and death of Edgar Allan Poe. Using the resources that I have made available to you, you will learn more about how to carry out/complete your individual assigned tasks. You will then take the knowledge you have uncovered through your astute detective skills and combine that knowledge with your group members to create a timeline and presentation to the class entitled, “Edgar Allan Poe—What Lies Beneath!” You will do a Power Point presentation of your material. (A minimum of 10 slides.) But That’s Not All Folks…  You will also write a short story, in the style of Edgar Allan Poe, which will determine the “true circumstances” of his demise. This trail, however I fear, must be one you walk alone!!!

Process: Directions 1) Within your group you will divide yourselves into the following categories: Presenter, Researcher, Graphic Designer, and Secretary. Everyone will need to help research and write the final product in order to receive full credit. 2) Click on the embedded videos in order to further understand the roles you have chosen. Links will also be provided for additional “creative” insight. 3) Do your research on the websites I have provided for you. 4) Share, discuss, and teach your group what you have learned. 5) As a group, decide what information is important enough to include in timeline and presentation on Poe. Keep in mind that you need to discuss the culture that surrounded him, his literature/works, his personal life, and his death. Refer to the rubric for specific grading criteria. 6) You will individually write your short stories in the style of Edgar Allan Poe and turn those in with your group’s presentation. Refer to the rubric for specific grading criteria.

Job Roles—Presenter  You are the person who will present the findings from your group to the rest of the class. Watch the video Powerful Presentation Skills: Body Language in order to get a better idea of how to be a good presenter.

Job Roles—Researcher  You are the person who will look at all the various links of information provided below on Edgar Allan Poe. You will only need to use the links below. Make sure to right click on the link below, then select open hyperlink. You’re All Set!! The Edgar Allan Poe Museum Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site Edgar Allan Poe Society of Baltimore Knowing Poe Edgar Allan Poe Wikipedia

Job Roles—Graphic Designer  You are the person who will find a creative way(s) of assembling the presentation materials on Mr. Poe. Below is a video on PowerPoint for you to get a better idea of how to be creative with this process.

Job Roles—Secretary  You are the person who will take notes and organize all the information. Watch the video on Cornell Note Taking to help you better understand how to take notes.

Conclusion : WOOHOO Detectives—YOU DID IT!!!! I now have a much clearer understanding of Edgar Allan Poe and the various aspects of his life that impacted him on a personal level, helped to influence his writings, and even helped to destroy him in death! P.S.—I can’t wait to read your short stories!!
