Oversized Vehicle Parking Restrictions in Residential Neighborhoods PUBLIC WORKS COMMISSION JANUARY 18, 2012

Background O City amended SMMC in 1996 to prohibit commercial parking in residential neighborhoods O Defines commercial vehicles as being greater than 10,000 lb. GVWR O In 2011, approached by SMUHA and asked to address oversized vehicle, RV and boat parking in neighborhoods O Working with SMUHA, PD, Code Enforcement and Attorney’s Office to revise SMMC language

Commercial Vehicles O Expands definition to include characteristics: O Weight – 10,000 lb. GVWR O Width – 7.5 feet O Height – 8 feet O Length – 20 feet

Recreational Vehicles (RV) O New section defines RV as motorized vehicle, or non-motorized trailer: O Weight – 10,000 lb. GVWR O Width – 7.5 feet O Height – 8 feet O Length – 20 feet O Provides for exceptions

RV Parking Exceptions O Loading or unloading of persons or property O Breakdown or for repairs – up to two hours O Overnight parking for loading or unloading of vehicle for departure or return from planned trip O Must be parked fronting owner’s property O Can only occur twice during any 7 day period

Implementation O Appropriate signage needed O Signage program needs to have systematic approach: O Entrances into residential neighborhoods from collector or arterial streets O Analysis indicates need for 820 signs at a cost of $164,000
