1 UK Project Roy Preece – STFC Alan Grant, STFC

Finance Staffing Update on stepIV position Milestones Critical Path – stepIV Magnetic field mitigation 2

MICE Finances - September 3 Negative Variance in September ~ £87 after re- profiling

MICE Finances - January 4 Negative Variance now ~ £167

Predicted overspend reduced from:- ~ £366k August to £167k January Advance from EB :- £150k advance from next years money to offset the overspend Payments:- Focus Coil 1 – acceptance after commissioning at RAL - £151.8k Dependant on number of quenches and supply of LHe – this is a concern Focus Coil 2 – Stage payment when cold mass and OVC complete - £151.8k From the Tesla schedule, and contact, this will be paid this year, projected delivery mid April – need to consult with Tom Bradshaw / Wing Lau to ensure the build is a the correct point for payment – slight concern 5

Staffing 6 STFC: -RF Engineer has been appointed and will be starting 11 th March -AN discussing where and when his work will begin. -Requirement for Operational staff for Q3 during magnet installation, commissioning and operation. -Operational manager -Cryo engineer -Magnet expert CONCERNS:- -Essential to maintain international planning and enhanced Project Office functions -Need to recruit Hydrogen System operator & provide safety training. - RF work beginning to ramp up, need full commitment of ASTEC & RF systems engineers. Plan is to recruit a graduate engineer who eventually will be based at MICE.

Milestone – [1] 8

Milestone – [2] 9 Magnet Deliveries MICE Steps:- Installation Completion

Step IV - Critical Path 10 Critical path driven by delivery of Spectrometer Solenoids Solenoid installation in series, due to mapping requirements & resources Mapping location being investigated – consideration for mapping at Wang

Concerns Mitigation of Stray Magnet Field Further analysis shows that problem is more severe than first thought. Need to find alternative position for sensitive electrical components, racks & compressors etc. Plans :- 1.Move all magnet cold head compressors to the West wall of the hall 2.Move the power and control racks to the room provided by ISIS, not the plant room. Increase in floor space in the control room. In parallel :- 1.Provide return yolks around magnets ~ 130T of steel, needs to be engineered properly, supports, access etc. Concerns :- 1. Tracker cryostats will require significant shielding due to their proximity and inability to be moved away from the beam line. 11
