Realising a whole systems approach to tackling obesity in Medway

Steps So Far Obesity listed as a priority within JHWS and relevant actions set with delivery plans Asset mapping of physical activity, healthy eating and weight management opportunities available in Medway Held Medway Obesity summit, chaired by most senior leaders requesting attendance from all potential partner chief executives. Event facilitated by external obesity expert and aimed to raise profile of agenda, recruit support, discuss ideas and priorities Gain resident views of what their priorities are related to obesity and what ideas they have for taking action Local obesity insight, asking target audiences views on perceptions of obesity, barriers to accessing support or changing behaviours and what support services they would like Paper submitted to cabinet and HWB to endorse development of a local obesity framework Formed local obesity network from attendees of summit, holding bi-annual events/ update sessions. Reporting on progress, nudging partners to take more action and recruit support Identify individual providers of all local obesity interventions

Medway’s whole system approach to excess weight in childhood in Medway

We aim to create this whole system by: Development of a Medway Tackling Obesity Framework Continual engagement with intervention providers Continual engagement with residents and professionals Gap analysis of services once all existing activities are mapped Coordinate evaluation of individual programmes Marketing and promotion of all local activities, services and interventions Continual networking and partnership working between providers and stakeholders Develop prioritisation framework

We will measure the effectiveness of this whole systems approach by: Numbers of interventions and individual projects taking place to tackle obesity Volume of local residents aware of and taking part in services Number of interventions evaluating impact Quality of interventions and projects Number of new interventions being taken forward that are either identified as priority by evidence base prioritisation framework or by community Local and national indicators of obesity levels and healthy lifestyle behaviours
