Advisory January 19, 2016

What are my long-term goals?  Last year you completed a Ten Year Goal sheet. Find that paper in your advisory folder now.  Look over what you recorded at that moment a year ago.  Has your career choice changed? Are you still on the same path?  Anyone willing to share????

Think Career First Then Plan  Last year we discussed thinking of a potential career first, then planning the steps necessary to get to that career choice.  No successful adult magically becomes a doctor, lawyer, or head of a company without making long-term plans.  If you consider a career first, you’ll have the opportunity to plan for your future. Even if you change your mind five or six times, by thinking of a career first, you’ll save time over the long haul by being able to plan for a specific goal.

My Ten Year Plan  Teachers, please distribute the Ten Year Plan sheet now.  Be sure to fill in the correct information on the top two lines.  As of today, what do you hope to do immediately following high school. Select the box that indicates your current goal.

Career Choice  Write down a career you think would be your top choice right now. If you’ve NEVER thought about this, start thinking! You’ll be an adult SOON! Choose a career for now so you can begin thinking of different opportunities. You may NOT leave this blank!  Explain why this career interests you today.  Talk to your neighbor and see if you or your neighbor knows anything about the education, if any, that is required for your career choice.

Your Career Choice  Sometime during the spring semester, you will meet with Mrs. Makela to help you research the education and/or training required for your career choice.  Your advisory teacher will also help you investigate career opportunities. After you meet with these teachers, write down the education or training required for your career choice on your Ten Year Plan sheet.  The Career Fair is February 10. This will be a great opportunity for you to speak with people in specific career fields.

Ten Year Plan  Keep this paper in your advisory folder. We will revisit this over the next few months.  Think about your future while you are in high school.  If you take advantage of your time at FBHS, you will discover that your Ten Year Plan is truly within reach.  Believe it or not, someday you’ll want to be a self-sufficient adult. Planning for your future is always a good investment.

Your Ten Year Plan  Goals become reality with preparation, planning and hard work. Are you willing to work hard, plan and prepare for your future?
