Coping Skills for Children of Drug Addicted and Mentally/Emotionally Challenged Parents 04/13/2016

Presenter-Nadia Noel (Community Outreach Specialist) Time-36minutes

Objectives Recognize and examine ways to help foster children of addicted and mentally/emotionally challenged parents cope with their emotions, stresses, and problems. Examine side effects of having a parent that deals with addictions or mental/emotional challenges. Understand protective and risk factors in children and families Learn coping skills we can gain from an understanding of the protective factors.

Good parenting according to National Institute of Child Health and Human Development : Keeping your child safe Showing affection and listening to your child Providing order and consistency Setting and enforcing limits Spending time with your child Monitoring your child’s friendships and activities Leading by example

When parenting is done poorly: Neglect-failure to properly care for Abuse-defined as the regular patterns of behaviors in a relationship that are used to gain and/or maintain power and control over another person.

Addiction Is a mental and behavioral health issue Is it the inability to live without a substance, item, activity It is signified by the compulsion to use It is both psychological and physical A symptom of addiction is withdrawal, which is experienced when the substance, item, or activity is not in use for an extended period of time It is a chronic disease

Other common Mental Health Issues/Emotional Issues Anxiety Trauma Mood Disorders Panic Attacks Psychotic Disorders Eating Disorders Inappropriate/ineffective ways of coping Continual hardships that affect emotional wellbeing

Some side effects of having a parent who struggles with addiction, emotions, or other mental illness Guessing at what is normal Difficulty having fun Judging themselves mercilessly Difficulty with emotional relationships Feeling different from other people Tendency to be impulsive Either super responsible or super irresponsible

Some side effects of having a parent who struggles with addiction, emotions, or other mental illness Desperately seeking approval or affirmation Suffering from chronic anxiety Lacking self-discipline Compulsive liars Suffering from a critical deficiency of self-respect Fear and mistrust of authority figures

How can a child overcome their parent’s struggles? Protective Factors are individual or environmental characteristics, conditions, or behaviors that reduce the effects of stressful life events; increase an individual’s ability to avoid risks or hazards; and promote social and emotio9nal competence to thrive in all aspects of life now and in the future Coping skills are behavioral and psychological efforts to manage, minimize, or tolerate stressful events. Risk factors are individual or environmental characteristics, conditions, or behaviors that increase the likelihood that a negative outcome will occur.

Example of Protective Factors for children Good health History of adequate development Above average intelligence Hobbies and interests Good peer relationships Stable relationship with parents Adequate housing Parents have a model of competence and good coping skills

Examples of Risk Factors for children Feelings of insecurity Lack of trust Insecure attachment with parents Social isolation, lack of support Dangerous/violent neighborhood Lack of access to medical care, health insurance, adequate child care, and social services Parental psychopathology Poor parent-child interaction, negative attitudes and attributions about child’s behavior

Protective factors that help children cope Personality factors: Active coping style Positive self-esteem Good social skills Internal focus of control Balance between autonomy and ability to seek help

Protective factors that help children cope Social/environmental protective factors Access to health care and social services Consistent parental employment Adequate housing Family religion and/or faith participation Good schools Supportive adults outside of family who serve as a role model/mentors to child

Protective factors that help children cope Parental/family protective factors Secure attachment Positive and warm parent-child relationship Supportive family environment Household rules/structure Parental monitoring of child Extended family support and involvement, including g caregiver help Stable relationships with parents Parents have a model of competence and good coping skills Family expectations of pro-social behavior

Coping skills gained from protective factors Seeking support-asking for help or finding emotional support from family members or friends Problem solving-aims to locate the source of the problem and determine solutions Adjusting expectations-anticipating alternative outcomes to situations Positive reframing-humor Relaxation/exercise-to manage stress Venting-in moderation can be healthy
