Why is it important to know your times tables and related division facts?

There is now an even greater emphasis for children to be proficient in basic skills (number bonds, place value (hundreds, tens, units) and times tables at ever earlier ages. There is an expectation that children will be able to recall these facts quickly and apply them in problem solving and investigations. The National Curriculum states the following: Year 2: ‘become fluent in the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables and connect them to each other.’ Year 3: ‘recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3,4 and 8 multiplication tables.’ Year 4: ‘recall multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12x12.’ Year 5: ‘they apply all multiplication tables and related division facts frequently, commit them to memory and use them confidently to make larger calculations.’ Year 6: ‘continue to use all the multiplication tables to calculate mathematical statements in order to maintain their fluency.’

On load, will play Livin’ On A Prayer but mp3 must be stored locally.

The times tables are the basics of maths The times tables are the basics of maths. If you know the basics, you’ll find the rest much much easier.

What is Times Tables Rock Stars? Daily practice. Some different times tables each week but also consolidation of previous weeks. Some multiplication, some division.

Introduction Knowing your times tables off by heart is like being able to play a guitar behind your head – it makes you a rock star... a Times Table Rock Star!

Answer as many questions as you can in 1 minute Answer as many questions as you can in 1 minute. Play on your own in garage and against other children in your class in the rock arena. Earn coins to spend on your avatar!

Rock Star Status When it comes to time tables, speed AND accuracy is important – the more facts you remember the easier it is for your brain to do harder calculations. The quicker and more accurate you are, the closer you get to becoming a Times Table Rock Star!

If you can answer any times tables question in less than… …4 seconds you’re a Headliner …3 seconds you’re a Rock Star …2 seconds you’re a Rock Legend …1 seconds you’re a Rock God

How can you help your child to become a Rockstar How can you help your child to become a Rockstar? Encourage your child to complete the games in short bursts, playing 2 or 3 games at a time. Support at home Play the games everyday to help improve speed and accuracy. Discuss how many they got wrong and what their average speed was for each question. Challenge your child to try to beat their score/time from the last game. Make it fun, give praise and encouragement, will you be this week’s rockstar?

How can you help your child to become a Rockstar. Now it’s your turn How can you help your child to become a Rockstar? Now it’s your turn! Turn on the chromebook. Now it’s your turn! Open the TimesTables Rockstars link Type in your username and password, provided on the sheet Click on ‘garage’. Play the game, how many can you complete in 1 minute? Play again, can you improve your speed and score? You can also play in the rock arena against other people in your class. Have fun!
