To explain the requirements of the new Maths curriculum in Key Stage 1 and the importance of developing firm foundations.
To familiarise you with some of the activities your child will be doing in class.

3. New Curriculum
A ‘Mastery Curriculum’ based on 3 strands: 1.FLUENCY 2.REASONING 3.PROBLEM SOLVING

4. New Curriculum
Aims to ensure that all pupils
become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, through varied and frequent practice over time, so that pupils have conceptual understanding and are able to recall and apply their knowledge rapidly and accurately to problems.

Discussion is encouraged, developing reasoning skills – the ability to explain how they know and why.
Pupils are encouraged to look for and recognise patterns and connections in familiar numbers.

Counting forwards and backwards from any number and understanding the value of each digit.
Understanding that we only have 10 number symbols - how our number system works in Base 10.

What happens when we add 10 more, 20 more, 1 more, 100 more?
Partitioning numbers into tens and ones.

16. Number bonds (Part – whole)
Children need to know the pairs of numbers that add to 5, 6, 7 and all numbers to 10.
They will go onto recognise the related facts
e.g = 8
5 + 3 = 8
8 – 3 = 5
8 – 5 = 3 8 5 3

17. Number bonds to 10 (A landmark)
Use 10 as a landmark number e.g
How to I get to my landmark of 10? I need 2 …
so = 10+5 =
Use the number bonds to 10 and place value to recognise and find related facts
e.g = = 30
= = 100

20. Multiplication and division Facts
Doubling and halving
Facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables and the corresponding division fact.
If I know 3 x 5 = 15 what other facts do I know?

4 x 5 = 20
20 grouped into 5s is 4 groups
20 divided by 5 = 4

24. Memorisation and Explanation
Reinforce the Key Instant Recall Facts which are sent home each half term.
Be aware of the facts learnt previously and keep revisiting.
Help your child with their Maths homework – ask them to explain to you the game they are playing.
Play dice or card games that encourage counting, addition and recall of number bonds.
Chant/sing times tables, use 2ps, 5ps to count multiples.
Talk about the time and use of the clock during the day.
Use pennies and 10 pence pieces to practise clever counting and reinforce place value.
TALK numbers and make maths fun.
