FREDERICK DOUGLASS By: Amy Miller

Frederick Douglass’s Life  Lived from  Douglass was a slave until the age of twenty when he escaped by impersonating a sailor.  Douglass was always trying to learn.  His career started in 1841, when he spoke at an anti-slavery convention in Bedford, Massachusetts.

What did Frederick Douglass do?  Douglass was a key leader of the American Anti- Slavery Society or Abolitionists.  He was also a very influential and eloquent speaker.  Frederick Douglass changed his name when he escaped from slavery, he changed it from Bailey to Douglass.

What criticism did Frederick Douglass Face?

What methods did Douglass use?  Because Douglass was a writer he used the power of newspapers.  He also wrote books to express his views.  And because he had been well educated by his master’s wife he was an exceptional speaker.

What success did Douglass have?

Why was Frederick Douglass interesting?  Douglass was the first black man to hold a rank in the U.S. Government.

Practical or Impractical?  Practical- Douglass used his newspaper the North Star, which was dedicated to the abolition of slavery, to show his views.

What impact did Douglass have?  His book was the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave is still considered one of the most eloquently written documents.

What were Douglass’ keys to success?  Believing in yourself  Taking advantage of every opportunity  Using the power of written and spoken language to show positive change in yourself and in your society.
