Day One 10 minute A &E video-introduction to F. Scott Fitzgerald Turn I paragraph on theme in Sold. Staple rubric to it. See me for assignment if you were not here. All paragraphs are due today. Drops a grade each day it is late starting tomorrow

A tale of love and betrayal, Fitzgerald’s novel told the story of Jay Gatsby, a poor boy of obscure origins who rises to great wealth and prestige. In many ways, the novel was emblematic of its time. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald exposed the excesses of the 1920s—a prosperous age in which many Americans came to enjoy the blessings of consumerism and excess, only to see it all crash around them with the Great Depression that arrived in by Joshua Zeitz

Journal Write down words of advice that an adult constantly tells you. My father, for example, always told me “Never Look back.” Although he would often say this when we were driving and had just missed an exit, he also meant it in a metaphorical way: don’t look back at your life, look forward. No regrets, no guilt. His words took on special meaning for me when I taught the myth Eurydice hone. Her husband Orpheus convinced Hades to release Eurydicee from the underworld. Hades agreed on the condition that he not look back as they ascended to earth. He didn’t trust Hades and looked back. Persephone slipped back to the underworld forever. I learned that we can’t change the fact of the past. We must accept our mistakes, the deaths of loved ones, and move forward.

Chapter 1 Setting: Long Island, New York
