Purpose: 1.Education: Monitor and improve undergraduate & postgraduate medical education. Assure quality. 2.Research: Generate new knowledge in medical education & collaborate with other research entities in MEd. 3.Service & Consultation: Create linkages within SoM and others to respond to MEd Needs in the country. The Need for a Medical Education Unit

Structure DMED

Current Personnel 1.Academic: 3 faculty positions (Prof 1; PhD 1, Master 1); 3 adjunct lecturers; 10 part-time lecturers 2.Faculty Development: 3 PhD students, all SDFs; 1 Master (Public Health Med Educ.) 3.Networked with School of Education (One of the PhD SDF from SoE)

Core Activities 1.Academic Programs: Postgraduate Diploma (PGDEHP), MSc. HPE, PhD (Medical Education). MPH( Health Promotion & Education) in DPH 2.Faculty Development: [Panel of Courses] 3.Examinations Council: DMED oversees all the 15 Affiliate Colleges in the country

4.Support Unit to SoM: Curricula Development (recent Basic Sciences Master Review & Implementation (MBChB) Training in curricula writing & monitoring Educational initiatives 5.Educational Research & Consulting (List topics)

Next Steps 1.Strategically: a.The Vision is to be a college of medical education b.Offer a Masters and strengthen doctoral level training 2.Operationally a.Given that the department was established by University Council in (2001), continue lobbying university for sustainability & authority, and mandate. b.Through the Academic & operational support unit, strengthen academic & medical educational research activities critical to operate in a community of scholars). c.Resource Mobilisation-Generate Additional grants/projects/consulting to function more effectively.
