Chapter 8 Using Design in Fashion Family and Consumer Sciences Fashion Merchandising

Design The plan used to put an idea together. Used in garments, accessories, buildings, cars, landscapes, etc. Can advise people how to look their best

Design Elements of Design Principles of Design Color Shape Line Texture These elements are put together in different ways to form designs. Principles of Design Balance Proportion Emphasis Rhythm Guidelines for using the elements of design. When elements of design are used effectively according to the principles of design, harmony results.

Using the Elements of Design Design elements are combined according to current trends. Color Most exciting design element because noticed first Combined well to look its best Hue – name given to color Value – lightness or darkness Tint – toward white or lighter than the pure hue Shade – toward black or darker than the pure hue Intensity – brightness or dullness Neutrals – black, white, gray (beige)

The Color Wheel Primary Colors – red, yellow, blue Secondary Colors – orange, green, violet Intermediate Colors yellow–green yellow-orange red-orange red-violet blue-violet blue-green

The Color Wheel Warm Colors represent fire, sun, and brilliance red to yellow on color wheel give feeling of activity and cheerfulness Cool Colors represent water and the sky green to violet give a restful, calm, quiet, relaxing feeling

Color Schemes Ways that colors can effectively be used together Monochromatic Tints, shade, intensities of one color Analogous Uses adjacent colors on wheel (3) Complementary Uses hues that are directly across from each other on wheel Split-complementary Uses three colors; combines one color with color on each side of its complement Triad Uses three colors; equidistant on the wheel Accented Neutral Combines white, black, gray, or beige with a bright color accent

Using Color in Fashion Contrast Using color with neutral… Black and white Using color with neutral… Color looks brighter Colors with medium/dark value… Look even darker next to a light area Light colors look lighter… Next to a dark area

Using Color in Fashion More attractive if outfits don’t have equal areas of light and dark Better balance if light colors used above dark ones Three major colors in one outfit is max! One color for large area and another color or two for smaller areas

Using Color in Fashion White, yellow, orange, red make form look larger Dark, cool colors make form look smaller Bright colors used in small amounts and effective to play us good features A single color or close values for entire outfit… Makes person look thinner and taller (unbroken line created) Two colors combined in outfit… Seems to be broken into separate parts

Using Color in Fashion Sharp contrasting colors… If too tall… Appear to shorten body because eye stops at line of contrast instead of moving up in vertical direction If too tall… Outfit can be broken with different colors on top and bottom Personality is reflected in colors used
