Painting Vocab 1.Chiaroscuro - using strong contrasts of light and dark to achieve a sense of volume in three- dimensional objects. 2.Muted colors – Muted colors have low intensity. Paint colors can be muted by adding their complement (opposite color). Sometimes artists further mute colors by adding white or gray.

A core shadow should be black or nearly black. 5. Mid-tone – Areas in an artwork that are between highlight and core shadow. They are neither extremely light or dark.

Changing Value Value: Lightness or darkness of a color. Tint: mix white with a color. Shade: mix black with a color Tone: mix gray with a color

Painting Forms Form = 3D object For our purposes today we will think of forms as subjects in a painting that appear to be 3D. Forms are made to look 3D by adding light and shadow to them in specific areas. Each form must be painted considering the light source.
