Causatives -Means to “cause something to happen” or “make something happen” Use: Get someone to do something and have someone do something mean “to make, ask, or persuade someone to do something.” Context usually makes it clear whether the person is compelled(forced/made) or persuaded / asked. I get my kids to help me with the chores. I get my brother to fix the car.

Get and Have Get + person + to + verb I get / got my sister to clean her room Have + person + verb I have / had my mother pick me up from the bus stop. Get / Have + object + Past Participle. I get / have my hair cut professionally. We’re having a new house built.

Causatives While the book is teaching that there is no real difference between get and have … Get(s) / got = persuaded / forced Have / Had / has = ask and they did the action. Make(s) / made = forced

DIY P66 – Who cuts her hair? 1.Had a hairdresser cut it again. 2.Get it cut. 3.I get a friend to cut my bangs Get or have something done is a type of passive structure meaning “to cause something to be done be someone else.” I cut my hair = I cut it myself. I had my hair cut = someone else cut it for me.

It should look like this: I got a caterer to provide the food and drinks My wife got The Rolling Stones to play music. I had a priest conduct the ceremony. I had a tailor make our suits. I got my father-in-law to pay for the lot!

Lesson B. p Need + passive infinitive. Need to be done. The toilet needs to be fixed. 2. Need + verb + ing. Need doing. The toilet needs fixing. Both structures mean that something should be done.
