Ontario Pesticide Education Program Pesticide Safety Certification and Training for Farmers and Vendors

Ontario Pesticide Education Program Requested by Farmers Farmers wanted to show the public that they know how to use pesticides safely. – Protect food – Protect environment Pesticides Act, Regulation 63/09 – sale, transport, storage, use, disposal, and the training, certification and licensing of pesticide users and vendors. – classify pesticides by hazard to direct the use of the product.

Ontario Pesticide Classification Criteria ClassOntario Hazard 1 N/A 2 Very Hazardous 3 Moderately Hazardous 4 Less and Least Hazardous 5 Less Hazardous 6 Least Hazardous 7 Less to Least Hazardous - Domestic – Controlled Sales 8 Domestic products banned from sale or use – contain Class 9 9 Active ingredients banned for cosmetic use 10 Active ingredients allowed for use under the health and safety exception 11 Active ingredients that are biopesticides 12 Corn (grain corn) seed or soybean seed that is treated with a pesticide that contains imidacloprid, clothianidin or thiamethoxam

Private Applicator Certification Farmers who want to buy and use Class 2 or 3 pesticides in Ontario must be Certified Farmer. (Regulation 63/09, Ontario Pesticides Act)

Private Applicator Certification Farmer Assistants can: Participate in a Grower Pesticide Safety Course and not write the exam, or Participate in an on-farm training session given by a qualified On-Farm Instructor.
