Design and Make a Muffin S1 Home Economics

Lesson 1: Muffin Brief H Ec Dept is planning to have an American Muffin week to raise school funds. They will produce a variety of reasonably priced muffins for everyone to buy. We want your year group to create different school themes for the muffins such as the football team muffin, the healthy muffin, the breakfast muffin. Using the basic muffin recipe and help sheet produce an original muffin from a theme of your choice which can be sold at this event.

In your jotter, write the words from the brief that you think are most important Thinking about these words, put as many points as you can onto the spider diagram you are going to draw in your jotter

Draw a spider diagram in your jotter (over 2 pages) You will need more legs than are shown

Specification A specification is a list of points that must be considered when producing your muffins, thinking of the brief. My muffin must: 1. Have a reasonable school based theme 2. Be reasonably priced 3. Be produced from a basic recipe Complete 4 and 5 for your muffin, write all 5 in your jotter

Investigations There are many ways of finding out more information in order to help solve the problem. As this is the first investigation you will complete in Home Economics we have selected investigations that will help you discover the information you will need to successfully complete the challenge.

Inv 1: Class Survey Draw the following table in your jotter, Ensure you have enough room to write every pupils favourite muffin (20 rows)

Inv 1: Displaying your results Collect a piece of graph paper and display your results Stick results in your jotter, Pritt stick available from teacher

Inv 2 (all measurements must be in g or ml) Using available books, recipes, your own knowledge list as many types of muffins that you know exist Minimum of 10 should be listed e.g. 1. Blueberry Muffin 2. Choc Chip Muffin 3.

Handy Websites Below are some websites that will help you

My ideas (homework) From the results of your investigations write out the name and additional ingredients required for your two best ideas. (egg, flour, sugar and marg provided) Copy the following tables TWICE into your jotter (Suggestion A & B) Suggestion A

Which have you decided to make? Complete for homework if not completed in class I have decided to make__________ 3 reasons for my choice 1. ____________________________ 2. ____________________________ 3. ____________________________

Lesson 2: Costing your Muffin Collect the costing sheets required for this exercise Complete costing for your chosen muffin When complete stick results in your jotter

My solution Collect information sheet which will contain basic recipe and methodology for producing muffins Complete in jotter

Preparing for your task Recipe: Using the basic recipe sheet produce your own recipe including how you will prepare any additional ingredients and where they need to be added in the recipe. This must be completed to allow you to produce your muffins Stores Order: Complete a stores order to ensure all of the ingredients you require are available for you next week. Collect a blank stores order from your teacher once you have completed your recipe.

Homework Tasks You have to design and draw your own packaging label for your muffin on the homework hand out. Read the instructions very carefully You must ensure all required information is on your label to ensure it is legal

Evaluation Complete evaluation form and rate your muffin experience. Submit to class teacher
