THE ROLE OF REVENGE IN TEEN VIOLENCE

THEME  In Romeo and Juliet, violence is a reoccurring theme. The animosity between the two families often leads to violence between both of the families’ younger members.

Theme Cont. Teen Violence is also a problem in today’s society. More and more teens have resorted to violence to solve their problems, or to seek out revenge.

THEME LINKED TO ROMEO AND JULIET There are many examples of teen violence in Romeo and Juliet. Such examples include the death of Mercutio and Tybalt. When fighting broke out between the two, Mercutio was killed, which caused Romeo to seek out his revenge upon tybalt, which once again ended in death for Tybalt.

Theme linked to Romeo and Juliet Cont Upon the murder of Tybalt, Romeo was banished from the town. This ended up in a plan to get Juliet back to Romeo by faking her death and getting them back together again. Everything ends up going wrong starting with Paris showing up at Juliet's grave and being killed by Romeo. When Romeo turns up an presumes Juliet dead, he kills himself which leads Juliet to do the same. Which leaves both family's broken over the loss of a sizable amount of relatives.

+ The nature of revenge and teen violence How do teenage violence and the nature of revenge affect teenage society and how are they connected ?

 Teenage violence is a growing and reoccurring problem in our society. Revenge and teen violence often go hand in hand. Revenge is part of being a human. If we have been wronged in any way, we tend seek out revenge. This is common is high schools, often linked to romance, and can at times end tragically. The nature of Revenge and Teen Violence

 An example of teenage violence is when Seung-Hui Cho, a south korean teenager, resorted to violence after a long road of being quiet and not standing up for himself. In this particular example, this child was so quiet, many of his peers thought him to be mentally ill or mute. He was ridiculed in school and eventually, his emotional baggage was too much. One thing led to another, and he committed a school shooting and in the end, took his own life. RESEARCH

  Violence in teen relationships is becoming increasingly common. A 14 year old by the name of Jessica Contreareas, was physically and verbally abused in a relationship, but blamed in primarily on herself, which prevented her from ending the relationship right away. Preventing teenage Violence

 There have been many groups formed within schools and also outside of schools to inform many teens about the danger of teenage violence, especially in relationships. Such groups include “Peace Over Violence”, a group dedicating to informing young men and women about the effects of teenage violence.

 A poll in Oklahoma gathered the information that about twwenty percent of high school students were so concerned about their saftey that they felt compelled to carry a weapon on more than one occasion to protect themselves. About twenty-eight percent reported in the poll that they felt so hopeless that they had considered taking their own life within the past year.

Linking Research TO Romeo and Juliet While the teens in Romeo and Juliet did not have programs to be informed about teenage violence, their parents could have paid a large roll in preventing many of the tragedies that occurred in the play.

Linking Research to R&J cont.  One of the best examples in Romeo and Juliet that links violence and revenge is when Romeo’s best friend, Mercutio, was killed by Tybalt, and though Romeo did not want to, his need for revenge was too strong, and he killed Tybalt.

TEEN VIOLENCE AND REVENGE IN AMERICANS TODAY  As stated previously, Teen Violence is a growing problem is our modern society. Whether an individuals reason for resorting to violence is maintaining their ego, or seeking out revenge because of interference with Romance, it is in all cases inappropriate and wrong.

 Abuse, whether physical, verbal, or emotional, is another growing problem. If one is willing to be in a teenage relationship, they must be prepared to find other ways to work out problems, aside from violence.

Conclusion  How do teenage violence and the nature of revenge affect teenage society and how are they connected?  Teenage Violence greatly impacts teenage society in numerous ways. It not only hurts the victims of violence, but it puts others on edge, and denies them their right to feel safe and secure, simply because of some people that feel they need to take out their revenge upon another, whether a boyfriend, girlfriend, or peer.
