Lesson Objectives Teach participants how to successfully navigate the grocery store to choose healthy items. Use technology to track nutritional progress Empower participants to plan and create a well-balanced, proportional meal using the MyPlate recommendations. Encourage participants to create (and stick to!) an individual healthy eating pledge.

What is healthy eating, and why should I worry about it? Healthy eating can prevent chronic diseases like obesity, heart disease, cancer, and stroke. Mental health and digestive health can suffer from a poor diet. Moderation, not elimination! This lesson will help you get on the right track to better health and give you the skills to make good nutritional choices!

Pop Quiz! Write down your guesses for each soda How many teaspoons of sugar are in a 20 oz. Coca Cola? How many teaspoons are of sugar are in a 20 oz. Mt. Dew?

The Verdict! Coca Cola has 13 teaspoons of sugar in every 20 oz. soda. Mt. Dew has 15 teaspoons of sugar in every 20 oz. soda. 1 Sugar Cube = 1 teaspoon

The Meaning of Nourishment The purpose of food is to give our bodies energy and nutrients to function at an optimum level. It’s easy to “live to eat” in our society. “Eating to live” means finding the balance between enjoying treats and fueling our bodies with the right foods to stay healthy.

Health By Numbers 25% of Americans eat fast food each day. Americans eat 31% more packaged food than fresh food. 75% of healthcare spending goes to treating preventable, chronic diseases. 60% of Americans are overweight or obese. The number of deaths each year due to unhealthy eating & inactivity is 13 times more than those caused by guns, and 20 times more than death by drug use. Out of 26 million Americans living with diabetes, 90 – 95% have Type II Diabetes.
