SATs Meeting Thursday 16 th April 2015

What does SATs stand for? Statutory Assessment Tasks and Tests Usually taken at the end of Key Stage 2 (at aged 11).

When do the tests happen? This year the Year 6 tests will take place the week commencing the 11 th May 2015.(Monday – Thursday) It is very important that your child is in school, on time, for the full week of these tests.

Monday 11 May Levels 3-5: English reading test Level 6: English reading test Tuesday 12 May Levels 3-5: English grammar, punctuation and spelling test Level 6: English grammar, punctuation and spelling test Wednesday 14 May Levels 3-5: mental mathematics test and mathematics – Paper 1 No level 6 tests timetabled for this day Thursday 15 May Levels 3-5: mathematics – Paper 2 Level 6: mathematics – Paper 1 and Paper 2

How are the children assessed? For maths and reading the children will be assessed through a series of tests taking place throughout the week. For writing the children will be teacher assessed, which means they will be given an overall level by their class teacher based on the work they have produced throughout the year.

Maths Tests The children will sit 2 non-calculator papers rather than a calculator and non-calculator paper as in previous years. Papers 1 and 2 will follow the same format and structure as test A from previous years. Calculators will not be allowed in any of the tests. Children will also sit a timed mental maths test, like the examples children have been doing for homework.

Reading Test The texts will not be linked by theme, but there will still be three texts and they will increase in difficulty, which should be a benefit rather than the children having to do a selection of easy and harder questions on one page. The children will have a total of one hour to read all of the texts and answer the questions, rather than 15 minutes of reading time to begin with and then 45 minutes to answer the questions.

Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar The children will be sitting a Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar test (SPaG), which was introduced two years ago. The children just get a score out of 50 for the grammar and punctuation and out of 20 for the spelling. These scores will then be added together to create a level.

A typical SATS week day 8:30am – Children arrive at school for breakfast ( provided by school) 9am -12 pm – Tests to be administered in the main hall (with breaks in between) During the afternoon sessions, children who have been identified for level 6 tests will undertake them.

What are we doing in school? Promoting test technique. Developing areas highlighted from practise papers. Booster sessions to focus on key skills. Individual targets to support children’s learning.

How can parents/carers help? Encourage your child to read each day. Support your child with their mental maths homework. Support your child with their times tables. Encourage your child to use their CGP revision guides. Ensure that your child completes all of their homework. Encourage your child to do some extra revision on ‘I am learning’.

What information do parents get and when? Test papers arrive back in school in July and results will be included in your child’s end of year school report.

Any questions?
