Witch-hunt & McCarthyism Soyoung Lee Molly Brennen Sam Smith Cole Smith

Witch-hunt An investigation carried out apparently to uncover seditious activities but actually used to harass and undermine those with differing views.

Joseph McCarthy Young senator Anti-communist Made a public accusation that more than 200 communists had penetrated the U.S. government.

During the 1950s Americans concerned about Communism – Believed that Communism threatened national security and that threat outweighed individual rights – They feared it would replace democracy in the U.S.

House Un-American Activities Committee An investigative committee of the House of Representatives. People who were brought before this committee were branded as “red”, if they couldn’t answer the question quick enough, or if they just didn’t reply. HUAC hearing

Joseph McCarthy When he began to accuse army officers of being communists, at first, nobody knew what to believe. But then, they saw the hearings of the House Un-American Activities Committee on TV, they looked at McCarthy as a bully. Dec, 1945 he was formally criticized by the senate

McCarthyism A witch hunt because it is the practice of accusing people with no evidence. Just how senator McCarthy blamed everyone of being a communist, people in Massachusetts accused everyone of being witches.

Incidents of Witch Hunts Red Scare- Innocent people that were suspected of being communist were jailed for expressing their views, civil liberties were ignored. Hollywood Blacklist- When actors, directors, musicians, and other entertainment professionals were denied their jobs because of their involvement of Communism.
