1 18.3 The Second “Red Scare”

2 Looking for Hidden Commies
The Loyalty Review Board attempted to weed out the un-loyal “commies” from the govt. House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) claimed secret communists snuck pro-Soviet propaganda into movies Heads of movie companies played along and blacklisted hundreds suspected of communism

3 Looking for Hidden Commies
Alger Hiss was a shocking example of an actual communist spy in the govt. The Rosenbergs didn’t work for the govt., but they were charged with getting A-bomb secrets to the Soviet Union First Americans executed for espionage (spying)

4 Joe McCarthy (R-Wisconsin) Boring senator who tried to make himself more popular & newsworthy Would routinely accuse govt. workers of communism with no proof But the more you repeat an accusation, the more others will take it as truth… This tactic is often called “McCarthyism” or a “witch hunt”

5 Joe McCarthy McCarthy’s 1954 nationally televised hearings about “commies” in the Army was his downfall When people saw McCarthy harassing respected army officers on live TV, they were disgusted Died of alcoholism complications 3 years later
