Construction Basics We will use soft slab or leatherhard slabs of clay to build our lanterns. An element of texture needs to be addressed on the surface of your lantern. Best process: build the overall form of your lantern and cut away openings/latticework/perforations while the clay is leatherhard.

Project Process: Sept 10 th : sketch 3 lantern ideas (different shapes, themes, cultural references). Sept 10 th : select one lantern and sketch 3 views of that lantern (sides, bird’s eye view, etc). Address texture and size. Sept 10 th : begin a paper or cardboard maquette for your lantern. Try to construct to scale. Sept 12 th : begin wet clay construction of your lantern.
