Metric Measurement Vocabulary Today, we will be previewing the metric measurement vocabulary you will be learning in science with Mrs. Monaghan. You will be quizzed on these terms as well as lab safety next week.

matter: anything in the universe that takes up space

length: how long something is

metric ruler: instrument used to measure length

meter: metric unit of measurement for length

mass: the amount of matter a substance contains

Your mass is the same on Earth and the Moon. Why?

triple beam balance: instrument used to measure mass

gram: metric unit of measurement of mass *Can you think of anything that is measured in grams?

volume: the quantity of space occupied by a liquid, solid, or gas

liter: metric unit of measure for the volume of liquid *Can you think of anything that is measured in liters?

water displacement: method used to find the volume of an irregularly shaped object

weight: measures the effect gravity has on things

Your weight is different on Earth than on the Moon. Why?
