Institutional Profile

Mission The University of Texas-Pan American serves the social, economic, research and, most importantly, the educational needs of the rapidly growing transnational, culturally diverse population of South Texas. The University creates, preserves, and transmits knowledge that advances the region, state, and nation and that builds prosperity through entrepreneurship and commercialization. In a supportive environment dedicated to student learning, the University provides quality instruction in rigorous academic programs that leads to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees as well as professional certificates. Through teaching, research, creative activity, and public services, the University prepares students to be socially conscious citizens and transformative leaders.

Vision The vision of The University of Texas-Pan American is to be a premier institution of higher education. As a major, nationally recognized Hispanic-serving institution, the University will be a leader in addressing the needs of a culturally diverse society through discoveries and innovations of global significance.

Six Goals Provide students a quality education that they complete in a timely fashion. Identify and focus on targeted research relevant to South Texas, emphasizing collaborative partnerships and entrepreneurship. Enhance engagement with community constituents to meet challenges and maximize opportunities. Collaborate with primary, secondary, and post-secondary schools to increase access, participation and success in higher education. Leverage the University’s border location as a gateway for the Americas to initiate projects infused with global perspectives. Optimize the effectiveness and efficiency, especially of processes that affect students, staff and faculty, consistent with high quality organizational standards.

Community Involvement UTPA’s Community Engagement Office with its various centers provides: Small businesses with start-up and growth assistance such as business training, free and confidential counseling, research, planning and assistance with procurement and trade. Businesses and communities with data, information and economic impact studies. Counties and local communities with Asset management services. Survey construction and analysis services. Advanced manufacturing, research and education initiatives. Training sessions on leadership, census and other national and regional data resources. Outreach, training and technical assistance for farmers and ranchers, socially-disadvantaged minority agricultural producers.

Points of Pride

UTPA is the 11th largest university in the state and the sixth largest in the UT System. 3 rd in nation for undergraduate and graduate degrees awarded to Hispanics (Hispanic Outlook, 2013) 3 rd highest among all universities in the number of Hispanics enrolled (Hispanic Outlook, 2013)

Points of Pride 1 st in Mathematics 3 rd in Criminal Justice and Corrections 3 rd in Health and Physical Education/Fitness 4 th in General Psychology 9 th in Journalism National rankings for the number of bachelor's degrees awarded to Hispanics at UTPA by academic program are as follows:

Points of Pride 57% of UT Pan American students who have applied to medical schools over the past ten years have been accepted as compared to the state average of 34% acceptance over the same time period ( UTPA Department of Biology, 2013 ). Student enrollment in the College of Health Sciences and Human Services has increased by 38% since 2008 ( Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness, UTPA, February 2013 ). UT Pan American has the only Physician Assistant Program outside of a medical school and the program ranks 38th out of 164 in the nation, ahead of Cornell, Stanford, Loma Linda and other prominent universities ( US News and World Report, March 2012 ).

Points of Pride 90% of students in the UT Pan American Law School Preparation Institute who have applied to law school have been accepted to at least one law school (the national average is 60%) ( UTPA Department of Political Science, 2013 ). The internationally renowned UTPA Mariachi holds the title “Outstanding College/University Mariachi” for winning over 10 first place awards at national mariachi competitions. The UT Pan American Mariachi Femenil, an all-female Mariachi ensemble, is one of only a handful of such groups in the country ( UTPA College of Arts and Humanities, 2013 ).
