E-safety for parents and carers Mr C.Bennett

Welcome Why do we and our young children use (ICT)?

Questionnaire findings: Strategies for parents to have when tackling cyberbullying Safe alternative websites for the children to use General internet safety training for parents to help keep their children safe online A staff member as a point of contact for parent’s e-safety concerns

Digiduck’s Big Decision, Lindsay Buck It is often challenging to keep up with your children's use of technology; what they are doing online, who they are chatting to, what games they are playing and what they are downloading and viewing.

Cyberbullying Cyberbullying can be defined as the use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), particularly mobile phones and the internet, deliberately to upset someone else. It can be an extension of face-to-face bullying, with technology providing the bully with another route to harass their target. However, it differs in several significant ways from other kinds of bullying: the invasion of home and personal space; the difficulty in controlling electronically circulated messages; the size of the audience; perceived anonymity; and even the profile of the person doing the bullying and their target.

Some cyberbullying is clearly deliberate and aggressive However, some incidents of cyberbullying are known to be unintentional and the result of simply not thinking about the consequences. What may be sent as a joke, may not be received as one, and indeed the distance that technology allows in communication means the sender may not see the impact of the message on the receiver. There is also less opportunity for either party to resolve any misunderstanding or to feel empathy. It is important that pupils are made aware of the effects of their actions.

What can you do as a parent / carer? Online identity fraud Cyberbullying Messaging and sexting Downloading inappropriate content Pornography Gaming misconduct / bad language Radicalisation Extremism Grooming

In cyberbullying, bystanders can easily become perpetrators – by passing on or showing to others images designed to humiliate, for example, or by taking part in online polls or discussion groups. They may not recognise themselves as participating in bullying, but their involvement compounds the misery for the person targeted. It is important that children are aware that their actions have severe and distressing consequences.

What can you do as a parent / carer? Age-appropriate games / apps / films / online TV Buy or download parent control software Agree a list of websites your child can access Set boundaries before they get their first ‘connected device’ Discuss with other parents Set time limits Know that ‘facebook’ and ‘youtube’ have a minimum age limit of 13 for a reason. Raise the importance of keeping mobile devices secure Don’t be pressured by your child Explain to your child that the internet does not give you anonymity or protection. Set boundaries before they get their first ‘connected device’ Keep up to date with technology

What can we do as a school? Ensure Acceptable Use Agreements have been signed by all pupils / parents E-Safety awareness week Teach E-Safety SoW from Reception – Year 6 Ensure Acceptable Use Agreements have been signed by all staff E-Safety group established Local PCSO to visit and talk to pupils Ensure only safe search engines are used in school Every child to receive unique J2e passwords Liaise with Birchgrove Comprehensive School regarding E- Safety issues
