LEXILE LEVELS

BUFORD ACADEMY LEXILE INFORMATION *In the Buford Academy Media Center, there are signs throughout noting the Lexile range of each section. This helps the students find a book efficiently in their Lexile range.*

WHY READ 20 MINUTES AT HOME EVERY NIGHT? Data sourced from Perry & Lecompton Unified Schoool District

COMMON CORE LEXILE INFORMATION Grade 2012 CCSS Text Measures 2420L to 650L 3520L to 820L 4740L to 940L 5830L to 1010L *The chart above shows the Lexile ranges for each grade level, according to the 2012 Common Core State Standards (CCSS).*

LEXILE LEVELS FOR GEORGIA MILESTONES Grade Level Beginning Lexile Level Mid Year Lexile LevelEnding Lexile Level 2450L500L550L 3 600L650L 4 700L750L 5 800L850L *These Lexile Levels were found based on the passing Lexile scores for the Georgia Milestones Test.* milestones-end-of-grade-testing--april aspx

GRADE LEVEL FLUENCY GOALS When completing running records with a student, these standards should be used as guidelines. These are end of the year standards so students will be working towards these goals for the entire year. *CWPM= Correct Words Per Minute *The chart above is based on the Georgia Performance Standards.*

FINDING A “JUST RIGHT” PASSAGE If the student’s accuracy is below 90%, you need to retest the student with a lower Lexile level passage. “Anything less slows the rate of improvement, and anything below 90 percent doesn’t improve reading ability at all.” (Allington, 2012; Ehir, Dreyer, Flugman & Gross, 2007)

TESTING READING FLUENCY 1.Print a passage and time the student reading for one minute. 2.Count up how many words the student read in the one minute. 3.Count up the errors the student made. 4.Divide the CWPM by WPM and multiply by 100. Example: Kate read 105 words in one minute. She made 3 mistakes. 102/105 x 100 = 97% accuracy This passage is on Kate’s independent reading level. (Keep in mind that a student should also comprehend at least 80% of what they have read. )
