DO NOW: IF YOU WERE STRANDED ON A DESERTED ISLAND, WHAT 3 ITEMS WOULD YOU WANT IN YOUR BACKPACK AND WHY? – NO CELLPHONES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOMEWORK Chapter 34.3 Questions

LIFE OF A ROMAN SOLDIER  What do you think a Roman soldier had to carry in their backpack?

LIFE OF A ROMAN SOLDIER  What do you think a Roman soldier had to carry in their backpack?

LIFE OF A ROMAN SOLDIER  All Roman soldiers had to carry their own packs. Packs contained a three- day supply of food, clothes, a bedroll, a bucket, saw, digging tools, and stakes.

LIFE OF A ROMAN SOLDIER  Soldiers also had to wear full-body armor and carry an iron helmet and all of their weapons, usually a pair of javelins, a sword, and a leather-covered shield.

LIFE OF A ROMAN SOLDIER  It was about 90 pounds of weight. Not only that, each legion was expected to march 20 miles a day, then build a fortified camp each night.

ROME’S CONQUEST OF THE ITALIAN PENINSULA  After the Romans threw out the Etruscans, they signed a peace treaty with the Latins and banded together to fight common enemies  During the next 100 years, the Romans fought numerous wars against the Etruscans as well as neighboring tribes living in the hills near Rome

ROME’S CONQUEST OF THE ITALIAN PENINSULA  In 390 BC, the Gauls, a warlike tribe from the North, handed the Romans a crushing defeat and stormed into the city  While most people fled the city, the Gauls looted the city and burned Rome to the ground

ROME’S CONQUEST OF THE ITALIAN PENINSULA  The Romans could have abandoned the city, but chose to start over and rebuild  By 275 BC, the Romans had completely conquered the Etruscans and the Samnites to completely take over the Italian Peninsula

ROME’S CONQUEST OF THE ITALIAN PENINSULA  The Romans achieved major victories but also suffered heavy costs  As the territory grew, Rome had to keep a permanent army in all its lands to protect them and enforce its rule  More and more plebeians were forced to serve in the army

ROME’S CONQUEST OF THE ITALIAN PENINSULA  Rome also allowed some of the defeated tribes it conquered to become Roman citizens, but not all of them were equals  Some of them received limited privileges compared to others and Roman allies had to pay taxes to Rome as well as provide for the soldiers
