Introduction Current scenario: – 14 specialties – 39 SAS doctors in the Trust – 11 posts vacant – “actively recruiting” Training and learning needs 1.CESR Route GMC specialist Register 2.Do not want to be on the GMC specialist register “Good Doctors”

My role Support - development needs Identify educational needs Annually review developmental objectives and needs Areas of improvement in Trust support Prepare action plan Work with CT, Specialty Tutors, Clinical Directors and Medical Staffing Assist PGCT - Trust support for development Process - additional funding

My role To work with SAS education team. Developmental requirements of SAS Educational supervisors Network with SDAS Tutors -develop good practice within Trust. Develop on-going programme Training managerial responsibilities

Aims and Objectives Support and guidance Collaboration with Clinical Director (CD), Specialty Tutor (ST) and Education Supervisor (ES), and the Postgraduate Clinical Tutor (PGCT). – professional development – education and training of trainees

Aims and Objectives Identify felt training and development needs of SD and AS within the trust Fairly allocate funding skills / courses Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) via article 14 support professional development Criteria Royal College and / annual appraisal including PDP

What did I do? Learning needs analysis - form  Do you feel that generic course skills, would help you meet your learning needs? Will this activity / professional development help achieve your completion of CESR Will this learning activity support you achieve the standards set in the GMC -Good Medical Practice. How this learning activity will benefit the Trust? How this activity will benefit patient care?

Objectives -today  The Project  Regularly assess learning needs - TRAINING, DEVELOPMENT AND LEARNING NEEDS OF SAS DOCTORS  Arranging training courses  Speciality Specific Guidance – PDP  CESR- article 14  Obtain feedback

Funding Guidelines  East Midlands Healthcare Workforce Deanery form for additional funding  HOD -completes request form on behalf of Specialty (SAS) doctor  Activities should incorporate one or more of the following criteria:  Certificate of Eligibility of Specialist Registration (CESR) via Article 14.  General Medical Council (GMC) Good Medical Practice.  Professional development  Personal Development Plans

Generic Course and course fees  12 generic courses  Clinical Supervisor training course  Leadership skills course  above validated courses – arranged as an in- house rolling programme for the year  PG diploma (1) and course fees (5) wherever possible and appropriate – sanctioned.

DEANERY FUNDING CESR – Article 14 – route outcomes  CESR - (Jan 2011) request 4  2 – Need secondments  1- recently submitted Article 14 GMC – awaiting outcome  1 – needs to submit document to GMC  Request for secondment towards CESR – both cases obtained deanery funding  1 commenced secondment – Art 14 (after submission of business case to the Trust)  1 awaiting - Directorate approval

SUMMARY – SAS TUTOR ROLE  Trust employed post  Evolving role  Mentor/educator/facilitator/administrator  Ten SAS tutors across the East Midlands  Key interface between Trusts and Deanery  Regular regional SAS tutor meetings  Engagement

Future  CESR – route  Deanery support with secondments – Currently being piloted post / CESR and CESR applicants  Support with in house rotation as in a training programme – but without a training number? Pilot in place in Norwich rotation  Utilize FTSTA – Gold guide
