Presentation transcript:

Teaching Agency The Teaching Agency will be a new executive agency of the Department for Education, operational from April It Will ensure the supply of high quality teachers and teacher training. The Agency will deliver Government policy relating to teachers and instructors; examination officers; early education and childcare workers; classroom-based school support staff and Special Educational Needs Co-ordinators (SENCOs); and will support the recruitment and development of Educational Psychologists. The Agency will be responsible for three key areas of delivery: supply and, with others, retention of the relevant workforce; the quality of the workforce; and regulation of teacher conduct. The Agency will also fulfil sector body responsibilities with regard to staff who support teaching and learning. The Agency will take on key functions currently carried out by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA), General Teaching Council for England (GTCE), Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC) and the Qualifications and Curriculum Development Agency (QCDA).

Teaching Agency It will also:  assure the quality of all routes to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), ensuring that they are designed so that Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs) achieve professional standards at a high level and that ITT continues to develop to meet the changing needs of schools;  ensure that all awarded QTS have strong subject, curriculum and pedagogical knowledge;  award QTS to those who successfully complete ITT and demonstrate that they meet the QTS standards;  provide advice to the sector on qualifications that are equivalent to QTS, including providing European Economic Area (EEA) mutual recognition;  provide a database of teachers who have been awarded QTS that enables employers to check who has QTS.

Teaching Agency  maximise recruitment opportunities by drawing from a range of appropriate potential recruitment groups;  in line with Government policy, continue to market the opportunities and attractions of teaching and other relevant careers, as appropriate;  ensure provision of a high quality application and information service to trainees before they enter initial teacher training (ITT), Early Years Professional Status (EYPS) and other professional training programmes;  ensure sufficient trainees of suitable calibre enter ITT and early years programmes such as EYPS.

Candidates may be able to agree additional days - up to ten days in total - with your host school.  If candidates arrange additional placement days, the school may require and submit a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check on their behalf. This could take up to four weeks to process and will be paid for by the Teaching Agency (TA). Details of the documents you are required to provide for a CRB check are available at DirectGov:   Once the Criminal Records Bureau has confirmed your clearance you should contact the school to arrange the further dates.  If the placement lasts more than five days, we will pay a contribution to cover the costs (£20 per day for days six - ten). School Direct The government has made clear its intention to support a ‘school led’ initial teacher training system; with schools choosing how they want their teacher training programme to be delivered, in partnership with accredited ITT providers. ‘Training our next generation of outstanding teachers – Implementation Plan’ November 2011  We will launch “school direct” to give more schools the opportunity for close involvement in ITT

School Direct – Schools  School Direct was launched this year with around 900 places allocated to schools for September 2013 recruitment.  The school chooses which accredited ITT provider to work with and what they will offer e.g. PGCE. All places lead to QTS.  The school acts as the talent scout to select outstanding trainees and chooses how they are trained.  Expectation that schools will employ trainees as teachers within their alliances or networks once qualified.  Supports a system of recruiting teachers in the subjects and phases that are most in need for schools.

Benefits to trainee School Direct allows potential teachers to choose the school in which they train with an expectation of employment once qualified.  They are headhunted by school  They take control of their teaching career path and type / location of school in which you train  High level of school experience and contact with other teaching professionals while they train  25% bursary top up if they train in a school where more than 25% students are on Free School Meals (FSM)

How can candidates apply?  Applicants can register with the Teaching Agency to receive a central list of all participating schools.  Further information on School Direct for candidates and how they can apply is available at

School Direct - School Jan Mckenley

The advertising concept 1.We need to encourage the target audience to re-appraise teaching 2.We need to give our core audience the facts to support a reappraisal 3.The modern teaching profession offers competitive salaries and financial rewards (including very attractive new bursaries), rigorous training, progression and career opportunities The idea: Show high quality teachers doing high status things Use real, fantastic teachers, in real schools Include “messages” that point out the various benefits of teaching and correct current misunderstandings about the profession Conclude with the line Rewarding. Challenging. Teaching
