Causes of the Civil War Economic Social Political

Objective: Students will understand the events of the Civil War.

 Secession followed election of Lincoln- November 1860  Seven southern states secede before first battle  SC, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas  The first shots- Fort Sumter in SC  Lincoln called on Union volunteers & received overwhelming support  Four more slave states withdraw from the Union  Virginia, Arkansas, NC, Tennessee  Both sides expected a short war

UNIONCONFEDERATE

ADVANTAGESDISADVANTAGES  Big population  Industrialized- produced more ammunition, arms, medical supplies  Larger railroad network  Small, well-organized navy  Established government  Leadership of Lincoln  Must travel farther to reach battles  Fighting in enemy territory  Difficult to find good military leader

ADVANTAGESDISADVANTAGES  Fighting for survival– more passion for the war  Strong military leaders (Robert E. Lee)  Strategic advantages– a defensive war on familiar ground  Smaller population  No navy – vulnerable to naval blockades  New, inexperienced government  Very little industrialization (supplies)

UNION CONFEDERATE  Abraham Lincoln- President -Main reason for war was to preserve the Union  Jefferson Davis- President

Union Generals Irwin McDowell Winfield Scott McClellan George McClellan Ambrose Burnside Joseph Hooker George Meade Ulysses S. Grant

The Confederate Generals Jeb Stuart James Longstreet George Pickett “Stonewall” Jackson Nathan Bedford Forrest Robert E. Lee

 Rifles- more accurate; load in the back  Gatlin Gun  Minnie Ball  New technologies  Railroads  Telegraph  Drafts

 Ironclads  Steam-propelled warship covered by iron  Monitor- Union  Merrimac- Rebel

UNIONCONFEDERACY Anaconda Plan  To coil around the South- squeeze it to death, like a snake  Naval Blockade  Get control of the Mississippi River to split Confederacy  Do enough damage to break Union’s will to fight  Get military support from Britain and France (they rely on southern cotton)

 With your partner, look and see how the Union and the Confederacy compared with one another. Which had the advantages? Disadvantages?  Use pages in your textbook along with your prior knowledge of the regions to complete the chart on your notes sheet.
