WARWICK SCHOOL SCIENCE PROJECT Creating the UK’s premier school science faculty

“A project like no other in the history of Warwick School ” Chair of Governors “ You can go to the boundaries of what science knows. You can ask a question of teachers and maybe they don’t know because nobody knows! ” Pupil, Lower 6th

ANCIENT FOUNDATION, MODERN SCHOOL Setting standards of excellence for 1000 years Superb staff, high academic achievement Fine facilities - Theatre, Sports Hall, Pool, Sixth Form Centre, IT Centre We deliver: responsible, confident, students skilled for the modern world We give: 25% of boys financial assistance with scholarships and bursaries

THE URGENCY In a pre-eminent School, pupils deserve the very best facilities Science facilities very outdated, cramped and disjointed Do not allow for –Achievement of science vision –Discovery led science –Research –Wider community involvement

THE SCIENCE PROJECT Up to date, 3-storey Science Faculty Chemistry, Physics and Biology floors Largest laboratories in any UK School – 14 x 110 m 2 Unique, dedicated research laboratory 80-seat lecture theatre, latest technology PLANNED TO OPEN SEPTEMBER 2007

THE WARWICK SCHOOL SCIENCE VISION ‘ To act as a national beacon for science teaching’ from which can emerge a future Nobel Prize winner, educated at Warwick School

THE DESIGN

WHY SCIENCE? UK plc urgently needs more brilliant scientists, engineers and inventors to build and sustain a dynamic, competitive economy Nationally, science at A level and university in decline NESTA aims 2005: real science, scientific literacy and practical investigation for all

SCIENCE AT WARWICK SCHOOL Already one of the strongest, most popular science departments in the country Science for all School years Enhanced, imaginative learning Discovery-led teaching Multiple practical sessions Interaction and cohesion Lecture theatre, exhibition space “I‘m looking forward to doing different experiments with better equipment. It will feel more like science” Pupil Year 7 “ More experiments with explosions and things! ” Pupil Year 7 New building will bring:

UNIQUE AT WARWICK SCHOOL Our 6 th Form already participates in ground-breaking research: Postgraduate level methods Externally led Contribution to scientific knowledge Relevant – asthma, angina, cancer, ageing “ The new department will bring opportunities to study Physics and Chemistry ‘A’ level in a top research facility. It’s hard work now - being cramped and trying to balance practicals and writing. ” Pupil Year 10

“ Students at Warwick undertake investigative work that is normally the domain of university postgraduates. It gives them a true picture of what it is like to be a practicing scientist or technologist. They feel inspired that their discoveries will add to our collective knowledge - and that they are playing a significant role in seeking solutions to the challenges that face us all. ” Dr Mo Afzal, Head of Science, Warwick School

FORGING EXTERNAL LINKS With academic, business and scientific communities: Research, experimental facilities and lectures Centre of Excellence for ‘Science in 21 st Century’ initiative with: –Local state and private schools –University of Warwick –Business For Warwick School pupils: Work experience Study opportunities Careers headstart “ Apart from university, there is nowhere you can get this experience – except at Warwick School. It all adds up to long-term opportunities to make a difference in the future. ” Pupil Upper 6th

Today, Warwick School needs your help. “We need to ensure we can meet the demands of contemporary teaching. Our science department is outdated, inflexible and does not have the space to teach science for the 21st Century. It is essential that we improve and upgrade our science facilities. We are poised to begin our most ambitious and exciting programme of development ever, and so I am asking all sections of the Warwick School community to support this vital campaign as generously as possible. We want to give our boys the best possible start to their lives, and to maintain the School's position as a leading provider of education.” Edward B Halse, Head Master
