6 Apprenticeship overview Aurizon Apprenticeship overview August 2015 Sample tasks may include: › Stripping and rewiring switchboards, power points and lighting in our workshop facilities › Installing electronic brake systems in wagons › Stripping and rewiring control and communications systems › Installing and maintaining electrical components, wiring and equipment for our rail signalling systems › Installing and maintaining air- conditioning units and associated circuitry Electrical Sample tasks may include: › Constructing and erecting traction equipment (e.g. foundations, masts) › Constructing and installing overhead traction equipment › Testing of run and tension conductors › Maintaining line patrols of traction systems › Operating and/or driving rail traction equipment and vehicles › Conducting switching testing and earthing of overhead traction equipment NB: Competence in the performance of medium to complex calculations using algebra and trigonometry, combined with a good level of English and reading comprehension, is an important element of working in the eletrotechnology area Power Traction Linesperson Sample tasks may include: › Fault finding, repairing and installing equipment relating to Aurizon’s telephone and radio network › Installing, maintaining and repairing radio repeater stations and solar powered back up systems for the effective and safe operation of our rail signalling network › Involvement in installation, commissioning and maintenance of equipment used for transmission and reception of voice, image and data signals Telecommunications

7 Apprenticeship overview Aurizon Apprenticeship overview August 2015 Sample tasks may include: › Carry out the installation, maintenance and repair of all signalling equipment including telemetry equipment › Repair and adjust mechanical signalling equipment › Report on the performance and condition of the signalling asset to ensure its safe and effective operations. Electrician (Signalling) Sample tasks may include: › Cutting, shaping, assembling and welding heavy gauge steel › Manufacturing fuel tanks or mufflers for locomotives › Welding headstocks and brackets for wagons › Manufacturing and/or repairing new and existing coal mineral and freight rollingstock Heavy Fabrication (Boilermaker) Sample tasks may include: › Machining of foundry casting which require a precision finish › Turning of wheels and axels of bogies required for all types of rollingstock › Producing specialised bolts and fittings › Manufacturing small components required for new wagons such as door shafts, bushes and pins Mechanical and Diesel Fitter and/or Turner
