Power Point: 2 Recap of Spell-Write Online Concepts My Favourite Words: The Concept Using this Section in Your Classroom Creativity as a Literacy Tool

Recap of the ideas from Power Point 1

Flexible Functions effectively in a variety of classrooms and spelling programmes without being tied to one Broad Links the Spelling Programme to the wider classroom programme Spell-Write has been successful because it is:

Spell-Write’s core concepts are: Spelling is a writing skill We learn to spell to write, to communicate with clarity Spelling is best mastered in the context of learning to write An effective spelling programme is balanced and meets the needs of each student

It is easier to spell a word when: You know how to ‘Learn a Word’ You can use alphabetical lists to find a word You know the meaning of the word You use the word in your writing You know the structure of the word You understand the power and beauty of words You feel safe enough to take risks

Understanding the power and beauty of words. My Favourite Words is about:

An Intimacy with Words By taking responsibility for a growing set of words, children are able to develop an intimacy with words they treasure as their own. My Favourite Words

At the heart of an effective spelling programme is a writer who understands the power and beauty of words. An Intimacy with Words

Add a New Word Create Print 1. Students enter words into their Favourite Word List when they find words that are fun, powerful or beautiful to them. A word they want to treasure. 2. Reinforce the meaning of the word by uploading an artwork created by the student that personalises the meaning of the word.

Create

Print Reinforce the meaning of the word by printing the word. The child can illustrate and/or write using this word, to reinforce the meaning of the word.

It is easier to spell a word when: You know how to ‘Learn a Word’ You can use alphabetical lists to find a word You know the meaning of the word You use the word in your writing You know the structure of the word You understand the power and beauty of words You feel safe enough to take risks

Click on the teacher dropdown menu to view all student's work.

My Students 1. Review all the student's favourite words. 2. Review each student's favourite words individually. 3. Edit where necessary. Lila’s Work

My Students 1. Analyse progress and the child's enthusiasms. 2. Decide what to focus on to grow a love of words. 3. Think of ways to enrich vocabulary through many experiences and reading,... writing and talking lots.

Other ways to use My Favourite Words: Class Favourite Word Lists: Use a class page to develop a class list of favourite words. Topic Favourite Word Lists: Use class page to develop a class list of favourite words around each class topic. Share: Remind and support your students to share their favourite words. This helps students to value their work.

My Favourite Words and Creativity as Literacy Tools Comprehension Connecting

The first word most children learn to spell is their name because a child’s connection to a word they are learning is a key factor in committing the word to memory. Providing creative activities as part of the learning process establishes a connection to the word to be learned. It gives the child a chance to examine the concepts of a word in the context of their world and their experiences. In this way the connection is made and learning is enhanced.

The greater our imagination the greater our ability to enter this world and our ability to comprehend and express our thoughts. When we read and write we enter a new world in our imagination. We imagine the places, the characters, the events and motivations of the story through our own inner world of our imagination. Comprehension Each word is important. Understanding the meaning, beauty and power of each word empowers writing. Creative activities that challenge children to use their imagination grows their inner world, enhancing their empathy, understanding and memory.

Feedback of thoughts, experiences and comments for a Spell-Write Online Community.

Thank you for your time. And all the best to you and your class. Noeline Anderson The 20/20 Literacy Programme
