Religion in the Ottoman Empire Early in the empire the Ottomans were very tolerant of Christians and Jews. Later they began to take over land in Arabia and Persia and the new leaders were more strict Muslims who were less tolerant of other religions. This led to the decline of support by other religious groups and eventually added to their many problems and downfall.

Decline of the Ottoman Empire New trade routes led to less power for the Ottomans. The Empire became so large that it was hard for one Sultan to manage everything and local governments became more powerful which eventually led to nationalism. Many small groups declared their independence and broke away from the Ottoman empire thus further weakening it.

What is nationalism? Pride and loyalty in ones country.
