KIM SWEENEY EDL 690 SPRING 2014 DISTRICT SAFETY

INITIAL FACTS Our campus’ need to be safe CDC reports: In the school year there were 17 homicides that occurred at school % of students in 9-12 grade reported bring a weapon to school % reported being threatened or injured by a weapon at school.

LOCAL EXAMPLE January 14, 2014 Student brought.22 caliber semi automatic rifle and 500 rounds of ammunition to IR HS High school science teacher intervened How did the teacher know what to do?

HOW DO WE KEEP OUR PEOPLE SAFE? Brainstorm with a partner FIVE things your district does to keep everyone on campus safe Lansing Fire drills Lockdown drills ID tags Cameras Greeters Single entry point.

DISTRICT SAFETY COMMITTEE Districts in NYS are charged with convening a standing committee Ensure the district has a current safety plan District plans should be updated yearly Lansing reviews our plan in the summer September conference day – any changes are shared New staff orientation covers new staff.

COMMITTEE MEMBERS Leadership team Nurses Councilors School Psychologists School Board Members PTSO representatives Teachers/staff Buildings and Grounds Bus Garage Supervisor Any staff with special skills.

MEETING SCHEDULE? How often the committee meets is flexible Lansing We meet over the summer to approve changes to our plan We meet at least quarterly over the school year As needed if something arises.

WHAT IS AN INCIDENT? “An incident is an occurrence, caused by either human or natural phenomena, that requires response actions to prevent or minimize loss of life, or damage to property and/or the environment” (ICS100).

EXAMPLE Read through the scenario and think about how you would respond in one of the roles listed.

WHAT IS ICS? The Incident Command System Standardized, on scene, all hazard management concept Allows an organizational structure to be flexible and agencies to operate seamlessly together.

SOME DIFFERENCE WE MAY NOTICE ICS is very different from running a school district Relies on a tight command structure Very “top-down” during an incident This is not the time for consensus, listening to different opinions, and debating May take some adjustments by our personnel.
