1 Medina District Safety Plan

2 Purpose Developed Pursuant to Commissioner’s Regulation 155.17
Board of Education charged the Superintendent to appoint a District Wide Safety Team That team was tasked with the development and maintenance of the District Wide School Safety Plan

3 The Safety Team consists of but is not limited to
Superintendent of Schools Director of Finance and Human Resources Senior High School Principal Intermediate/Middle School Principal Elementary Principal Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds Director of Transportation Health Services Representative Cafeteria Manager Maintenance Staff Medina Police Department Orleans County Emergency Services Director

4 Concept of Operations The District Plan is directly linked to the Building Emergency Management Plans. The protocols in the District Wide Plan guide the development and implementation of the Building Plans. In the event of an emergency or violent incident, the Building Principal will initiate a response When authorized by the Principal, Designee, or Superintendent first responders will be notified. If it is determined necessary, the Emergency Response Team will be activated Additional local/county/state resources may be utilized

5 Plan Review and Public Comment
This plan was initially adopted on June 18, 2001 and has been on the district’s website for the past several years. The plan has been updated as needed on an annual basis and reviewed by the Board of Education. Full copies of the District Plan and the Building Level Plan will be submitted to SED within 30 days of this adoption The plan is reviewed periodically during the year and is maintained by the District-Wide Safety Team. An annual review is also completed on or before December 1. While linked to the District-Wide Safety Plan, the Building Plan is confidential and shall not be subject to disclosure.

6 Risk Prevention We continue to develop and investigate strategies regarding violence prevention and intervention Strategies for Crisis Intervention and Prevention (SCRIP) training Alternate placements for interventions of students deemed to be violent who cannot function in a regular school environment Alternate Educational Program provided by BOCES that address the criteria under Early Detection of Potentially Violent Behaviors Peer Mediation and Conflict Resolution – staff members work with students who are potentially violent to provide strategies to deescalate situations Always encouraging students to report any concerns regarding a violent or dangerous behavior of their peers Continual training and awareness of the Dignity for All Students Act (DASA)

9 Trainings, Drills and Exercises
The district will conduct annual training programs as directed by SED to insure that staff and students are prepared to respond appropriately in a given situation. SED has issued new guidance that requires lockdowns, lockouts and evacuation drills in addition to the normal fire drills Table top drills for staff and first responders Parents will be notified at least a week in advance when an exercise will be held – additionally a robo-call will notify parents the evening prior to a planned drill.

10 School Security The district is committed to providing a safe and secure working and learning environment at each school and district facility New employees are screened Reference checks Fingerprinting and background checks through SED School Building Security All Outside doors locked Every Exterior door will be an accessible egress Classroom doors will be locked when empty All visitors will sign in and the main entrance The district will implement the Raptor system to check visitors in
