May 7, 2014

 Establish a mandatory grade point average (GPA) for extra-curricular participation at Clayton High School.

 Overall recommendation is based in education and not eligibility.  Goal is to have more students eligible through increased support systems.  Early identification of struggling students will be key.

 MSHSAA expectations are inconsistent with Clayton academic standards.  Interconnecting extra-curricular activities with academic performance will increase student achievement.  Community survey indicates support for a minimum GPA.

◦ The average ACT score at CHS was 25.3 in ◦ We have a strong commitment to the social- emotional development. ◦ Emphasis on the development of the whole child is a hallmark of CHS. ◦ 99% of CHS students graduate from high school with 95% attending college.

 Any activity currently under the jurisdiction of MSHSAA.  In addition, any activity in which a student competes or performs.

 Semester Prior to Participation: o The student shall have earned, the preceding semester of attendance, a minimum of 3.0 units of credit.  Semester of Participation: o The student shall currently be enrolled in and regularly attending courses that offer 3.0 units of credit.

 Students need to pass 3.0 credits under MSHSAA.  Six D-’s are acceptable under MSHSAA.  Inconsistent standards and expectations send mixed messages  Student athletes can suffer loss of NCAA eligibility.

 PARENTS ◦ CHS should implement a minimum GPA requirement for any student participating in athletics. Strongly Agree: 36.24% Agree: 45.3% Disagree: 10.74% Strongly Disagree: 1.34% No Opinion: 6.38%  STUDENTS o CHS should implement a minimum GPA requirement for any student participating in athletics. Strongly Agree: 35.03% Agree: 35.03% Disagree: 14.01% Strongly Disagree: 7.64% No Opinion: 8.28%

 All participants in extra-curricular activities will be held to the MSHSAA standards.  All participants in extra-curricular activities must maintain a 2.0 GPA in all classes in which they are enrolled.  Academic eligibility will be in effect for one quarter, and will be reconsidered each quarter.  The GPA used to determine eligibility for extra- curricular activities will be the GPA of the student from the prior quarter.

 Probation  Academic Intervention  Priorities (Academic vs. Extra-curricular)  Support (Learning Center)  Loss of Open Campus  Weekly Monitoring  Loss of Eligibility

 Running the numbers….  Athletes Ineligible under MSHSAA ( school year): ◦ Students affected Semester 1: 6 ◦ Students affected Semester 2: 23  Athletes Ineligible under 2.0 GPA ( school year): ◦ Students affected Quarter 1: 14 (2 Fr, 7 Soph, 3 Jr, 2 Sr) ◦ Students affected Quarter 2: 36 (9 Fr, 13 Soph, 7 Jr, 7 Sr) ◦ Students affected Quarter 3: 12 (3 Fr, 6 Soph, 1 Jr, 2 Sr)

 WYSE/TEAMS ◦ 51 Junior/Senior Participants - 2 would be ineligible if new standards applied  Orchestra/Band/Drama ◦ 203 participants- 4 would be ineligible if new standards applied

 PHASE I ◦ school year: The new GPA standards would be implemented on a pilot basis.  PHASE II ◦ school year: The program would be fully implemented at the beginning of the year.  Feedback period will begin May 7, 2014 and ending June 11,  Vote on the final version will take place June of 2014.
