World War I Propaganda

Definition….  Propaganda – Information or ideas which are often deliberately projected to help harm a person, group, institution or nation.

Historical Context  The most common use of propaganda was in the political aspects of WWI.  Most commonly referring to efforts sponsored by governments and political groups.

Importance of the Poster.  The television had yet to be invented.  The radio was an uncommon item within the household / hard to find within the public realm.  Posters were the most effective means to project political messages.

Methods used in the Construction of Poster Propaganda  Catchy Phrases : Use of catchy slogans and phrases to garner support.  Expressions of Patriotism: Displaying symbols which represents the country ( FLAGS, EAGLES)  Demoralizing of an Enemy Force: Directly attacking the enemy.  Often half-truths : Use of false information to persuade opinions of readers.

Finding Government Support.  Propaganda was often connected with the negative feelings towards a particular party.  WWI Propaganda:  Focused on building military support.  Raising funds  Finding Resources
