Sidescan Mosaic Processes  Stage 1: Raw View  Load raw sidescan data – HSX, HS2, XTF or LOG files  Adjust bottom track, smooth heading and track line data.

Sidescan Mosaic Processes  Stage 2: Scan View  Full line can be viewed using the scroll bar.  Adjust color, gain, TVG and display options (water column removal, display range of sonar image).  Capture and measure targets (GeoTif and JPG images).

Sidescan Mosaic Processes  Stage 3: Mosaic  Create mosaics, export GeoTiff images. Apply image filters. Ability to use a Border file for mosaic creation in specific area.

Tiling of Mosaics Based on the resolution and the extents of your mosaic, HYSCAN may decide to sub- divide your mosaic into several GeoTIF files. This allows you to mosaic a big area at a high resolution. It takes a little longer, but you’ll get the detail you need.

STAGE 2 FEATURES AND OPTIONS: ADJUST SIDESCAN IMAGE CREATE AND MEASURE TARGETS EXPORT DATA TO SPREADSHEET SAVE IMAGE AS A NON-GEO-REFERENCED IMAGE ADJUST LAYBACK SAVE COVERAGE MAP AS TIF FILE

Sidescan Controls Adjustments Right-click on a side-scan image to get access to the Sidescan Controls window. ( short cut Shift+F9 ). Sidescan controls and a sample of the data set appear in a single window. Select Color palate. Gray Scale, Gold, Copper, Rust, Pastel, Intensity, Custom. Invert Color scale Set Gains Manual or Auto TVG Remove Water Column Set Display Range Show Range lines RESET button sets gain thresholds to best fit value

Sidescan Controls Adjustments Colors Tab  Select color palate  Adjust overall brightness and contrast  Invert colors option

Sidescan Controls Adjustments Gains Tab  Set Gain and TVG  Port = Stbd.  Port and Stbd. Independent  Advanced Tab:  Apply Auto TVG and TVG curve (P1, P2 and P3) Show TVG Tab

Sidescan Controls Adjustments Gains Tab  Remove Water Column  Show Bottom Track  Show Range Lines  Set Display Scale  0 = Actual Range  Select Side Scan Channels to be Displayed.

Targeting  In Stage 2, double click on any feature.  Use sliders to determine the 3 points along the target. Use the signal display to help.  Click and drag to measure contact, capture JPG or TIF and enter any notes  Targets are saved to a Target Database for viewing in other HYPACK programs Target screen displays contact. Use to take measurements, capture image and classify (new) Select Target (double left-click on feature ) Target window opens

Bulls-eye icon: Select on, then in Scan view, grab an object of interest. A target will be created with an image. (Shift-right click will remove a target) In a HYPACK Project, a new directory has been added to store all Sidescan images Targeting – marking targets quickly in Phase 2

Targeting: Example

Target Viewer  Use the target viewer to examine all contacts. Last contact made is on the bottom of list  Arrow keys to scroll through the list of targets.  Data fields in the target viewer are editable for any changes or updates. Report can be saved to a RTF file  TargetViewer program can run without a HYPACK key

Target Classification Database  Select Tools – Target Classification Database to open/revise database Target database can be made of any target image. User can add a confidence level and notes to each target Creating the Database Using the Database in Target Viewer In Target Viewer, select from classification drop down the targetID. Use the ? To open the comparison window Target classification comparison Classification database Target Viewer

Saving Image as BMP file Use the Save tool to capture the entire data file to a BitMap file. This is a non-georeference file, but holds all details of the imagery

Spreadsheet options  Configure spreadsheet for desired fields  Output data to a single file or multiple files  Use to adjust Layback for individual pings Spreadsheet display set-up dialog box Note: use Tools-Adjust Layback to modify layback for entire file

Saving Coverage as TIF file  Display coverage of all tracks.  Current view in display is bounded by blue box  Red represents Port side; Green represents Starboard side  Save image as GeoTIF file (right click on image) Coverage Map – Phase 2 Current view in display is bounded by blue box

Using Coverage Map to manage targets When a target is taken, a mark is generated on the coverage map. Use this feature to verify location or to confirm target Blue bounding box = previous line Red bounding box = current line Note the difference in position (approx 6 meters) when viewed in Scan View. Possible cause could be improper layback setting.

Stage 3: Sidescan Mosaic

Stage 3: Mosaic Set the mosaic options, then make it in a single step (1)Select files for mosaic (2)Enter resolution (3)Select Overlap method and Filter options (4)Single TIF or one per line (5)Use Border file for specific area mosaic (6)Name the TIF file Display can show Track Swath Coverage, Targets (from Phase2) and Border file outline. Use Options (F9) to enable coverage lines.

Resolution Calculator  Determine the optimal mosaic resolution based on your sonar's characteristics  Don't waste time and space on heavily-interpolated imagery  Calculate Along-track and across-track resolution  Load & Save sonar profiles across HYPACK projects  When closed, the best resolution is applied to the mosaic setup

Mosaic Filter options AVERAGE: Smoothes the mosaic by setting each pixel to the average of the 3x3 pixel neighborhood SHARPEN: Sharpens the mosaic by enhancing pixel contrast relative to a 3x3 pixel neighborhood MEDIAN: Smoothes the mosaic while preserving edges by setting each pixel to the 3x3 media value.

Example of Making a Mosaic Example of Making a Mosaic

Saving Your Data: Saving Your Data: Data can be saved as: HS2 – all settings ( gain, bottom track, navigation editing ) will be preserved XYIntensity – each point will have an intensity value. Be careful! Large file is created Export to XTF – creation of XTF file for other programs File Information holds details of number of scans and points.  When saving an HSX file to HS2, the name will inherit the frequency of the sidescan: 001_1223.HSX will be saved as 001_1223_ss1.HS2 for low frequency data and 001_1223_ss2.HS2 for the high frequency data

BATCH MOSAICING SIDE SCAN

Batch Mosaicking Run SIDE SCAN MOSAIC (HYSCAN) all the way to stage 3. Select ‘Add to Batch Mosaic’ option. Close SIDE SCAN MOSAIC program without generating the mosaic.
