Atlases Reference material Collection of maps and facts about the geography of the world or of its parts Collection of maps and facts about the geography of the world or of its parts What happened was the Atlas was caught having an affair with Zeus' wife Athena. To punish Atlas, Zeus ordered him to hold the weight of the world on his shoulders for eternity. One some guy made the first book of maps. He drew Atlas holding the world on his shoulders. The mad had named it "His book of maps and blah blah blah." It was a very long name and no one wanted to say it. So people would say, "hey have you seen the book of maps with Atlas on the cover?" then people would say "Did you see the book with Atlas?" after a while, people started saying... "Hey have you seen the Atlas?" and it stuck. It is fit that the book be named after him. What happened was the Atlas was caught having an affair with Zeus' wife Athena.
