 Any major development that rapidly replaces existing technology—it is coined as disruptive because it displaces and disrupts an existing market.

 … What would make a good example of a disruptive innovation?

 When was the last time you opened an encyclopedia?  Encyclopedia Britannica discontinued physical production in 2012.

 Automobiles  Telephones  Shrinking computers

 Smartphones  Digital music  Word processing

 Low-End Disruption  New Market Disruption

Shamelessly stolen from our disruptive friends at Wikipedia.

 Can you guys think of any other disruptive technologies?  How about something that could have been disruptive, but wasn’t?

 Have you ever called for or hailed a taxi?  Have you ever used the Uber app?  What does it take to disrupt a market?

 Even if you don’t look for transportation often it’s hard to deny the value of Uber.  Modern people want more convenient ways to get from point A to point B.

 Smartphones have already displaced an existing market.  Uber appeals to those that use them.  A few taps and you can set up a ride for when you need it.

 Using Uber’s fare estimation tool, I could catch a ride from here to Logan for less than $80.  Using a taxi fare estimation tool, the cost looked to be roughly $120.

 You can save a few bucks and you can save a few minutes.  What does that mean for the cab industry?

 The cab industry has been operating for decades.  It provided a more personal and specific alternative to public transportation.

 In the United States alone, there are numerous examples of cab companies taking legal action against Uber.  Uber in Massachusetts: GPS invalid method of fare calculation  Uber in California: Cab service without a license

 Uber has won a great number of its legal battles.  It has successfully managed to cause permanent damage to the cab industry around the world.  Innovation often fights the law.

 It’s difficult to predict future disruptive trends. People wanted faster horses.  It’s clear that disruptive innovations will continue to occur.  Competition has to take action to survive.

 Do you have any questions?
