Using a Recipe

Objectives  Identify the information found in a recipe and follow it successfully.  Demonstrate proper measuring techniques for different types of ingredients.  Define cooking terms used in recipes.  Describe two categories of cooking methods.

Understanding Recipes  A recipe is a list of ingredients with a complete set of instructions for preparing a food product.  Learning to use a recipe accurately is the key to good meals.  Using recipes helps you in achieving success and even allows you to create your own recipes.

Understanding how to use recipes continued…  Ingredients tell you what food items you need.  First it lists the exact amount of each ingredient you need to make the product.  Then preparation directions for combing the ingredients are next.  Utensil sizes for cookware or bake-ware are given, as oven temperatures and cooking times.  Then the recipe yield should tell you how many servings the recipe makes.

Steps for using recipes  Read the entire recipe carefully before you start to cook. Make sure you have all the ingredients and utensils on hand. Make sure you have enough preparation time to complete the recipe.  Note any abbreviations used in the ingredient list. Be sure you understand what each one means.  Before you start measuring and mixing, gather all ingredients and cooking utensils you will need.  If your recipe states to preheat oven, turn the oven on before you begin to cook.  For successful results, follow recipe directions exactly. Measure the exact amounts of each ingredients.  For best flavor and appearance, accurate timing is important. Follow cooking and baking times as stated in the recipe.
