Drawing From Observation Lines, Shapes, and Value

Unit Goals: Using Shapes, Lines and Value  1 - Be able to use basic shapes and drawn forms to produce (draw) the basic proportions of an observed object.  2 - Be able to use Contour Lines to produce (draw) a more realistic outline and detailed drawing from observation.  3 - Be able to use value to show the illusion of form in your observational drawing.

Lesson One Goal: Basic Shapes  Practice First: Drawing the Basic Shapes  Lets get started: Stand up and loosen up. Practice using the whole arm. Draw your shapes large.

Goal 1: Basic Shapes  Find the basic shapes of the object.  What shapes do you see?

Goal 1: Basic Shapes  Find the basic shapes of the object.  What shapes do you see in this object?

Lesson One Goal: Basic Shapes  Drawing From Observation:  Find Basic Shapes: Draw quick and loose. Draw large. Don’t worry about being perfect.

Lesson One Goal 2: Proportion  Find the basic shapes of the object.  Find the proportions of the shapes.  Draw as accurately as possible. Review: What is proportion? Two options to find proportions depending on the object or image.

Review: Object Proportion

Finding Image Proportion  Two Options: Sight and measurement.  Scaling an image.  Use one of the images on my website.

Lesson Two Goal: Contours  Goal:  Be able to use Contour Lines to produce (draw) a more realistic outline and detailed drawing from observation.  Review: What is a line? What is a contour line?

Lesson Two Goal: Contours  What is a line?  What are contour lines?

Lesson Two Goal: Contours  Blind Contour Drawing: Hands  Objectives: Draw slowly As your eye moves your pencil moves Do not look at the drawing but at the image as you draw

Lesson Two Goal: Basic Shapes  Find the basic shapes of the object using proportion.  Find the basic forms in images.  Pick it up and investigate.

Review: Basic Shapes Basic Shape = Basic Forms  1-Square=  2-Triangle=  3-Ellipse=  4-Circle= Examples
